Sunspire Candies Don't Have Artificial Ingredients Found In Other Treats

BOSTON -- A California company has introduced a new line of sweet treats that are actually good for you.
NewsCenter 5's Rhonda Mann reported that most chocolate is full of artificial ingredients and processed sugar, bad fat, and additives, but not Sunspire Company's new line of candies, which include peanut butter cups and peppermint patties.
"A lot of these are colored from natural coloring. So for example, beta carotene, beets, so we're getting the coloring from actual vegetables which is terrific," said registered dietician Joanne Keaveney.
The candies contain natural sugars from juices and honey. It's also heavier on dark chocolate, rich in a powerful antioxidant -- the same one that's in grapes and red wine -- shown to be good for the heart.
The new candy is not any lighter when it comes to calories -- it has about the same amount as regular chocolate. But some of the sweets are designed for those with food allergies.
"(The candies are) clearly labeled," said Keaveney. "They can eat them and not worry about having to go to the hospital with a severe food allergy reaction."
But how do the confections taste?
"This is very good chocolate," said one taste tester. "They taste just like regular M&Ms and I'm going to get some."
But like other sweets, Keaveney said, you'll want to limit it to a couple of times a week, especially with children.
"If you offer it every day, it becomes a way of life, and we still want to offer candy as a treat," said Keaveney.

Last week at a local chocolate boutique, I had a sugar-free PB cup with dark chocolate from a company called Ashers. Quite tasty! Probably habit-forming, so I don't go into the building the shop is located in too often.....
