Ok, since I'm getting close to getting more "mature" I thoght it was time to do something fun. Time to break out of that rut we've mentioned. It was a toss up between the tatoo and the belly button ring.I told Dh, jokingly, I was going with the BB ring. And he said "I hope your 2nd husband likes it!!!!!".Was that a dare or what????

So I got a belly button ring!!!!I did however settle for a clip on one.LOL Going to wait for just the right moment to spring it on DH.And then I'll get to work on picking out DH #2.......

Exactly! Why do women color their hair or paint their nails? It makes them feel better about themselves. Why do we celebrate when we lose weight and get into those smaller jeans? Because we know we look better and we're healthier and that makes us happy. None of that stuff changes our relationship with anyone else...God or human. DH might shake his head at me, but it doesn't mean that anything has changed. How we look and present outselves to the world is an expression of who we are and a function of the culture and society in which we live. If you choose not to pierce or tattoo, then that's your expression.

I got my ears done when I turned 40 and I love having pierced ears. I did it for no other reason than fun.Same way when I paint my toenails. It's just a fun way to expres my moods, emotions, whatever.

I look at it like wrapping a present, doesn't change what's on the inside.

No offense meant to anyone but sometimes I think things get way over thought.I'm not looking to change the world or myself, just finding a smile in the ordinary day to day things.

Oh, yeah and I'm looking to razz DH a bit while I'm at it!LOL

I like your way of thinking Patty. Sounds like a great joke for your DH. He should be proud at how hard you've worked to get a belly to show off.

About 2 years ago I had, another, hole put in my ear, ya know, one of those high ones. It took over a year to heal, was quite painful because of the cartalidge and I've heard that the belly button thing is very painful.

But, the way I look at it, if it makes you happy, brings a smile to your face, go for it.

"Why do women color their hair or paint their nails? It makes them feel better about themselves...How we look and present outselves to the world is an expression of who we are and a function of the culture and society in which we live."

Your comments and make me realize just how far removed I have become from today's world. It's been years since I've even cared about being a function of culture and society, or cared what it thinks of me... and even when I did care (back in college and shortly after), I never fit in anyway. I don't do so many of the things that most women do to fulfill today's ideals: don't color my hair, paint my nails (I do my toenails in sandal weather), don't have many "fashionable" clothes, have jewelry that doesn't see the light of day, often don't wear makeup, my hairstyle is one that requires minimal fuss. Even my fitness, when it was solely about "looking good", failed because I was focused on something my heart believes is superficial. Since my heart believes that, I've found other ways to feel good about myself which have nothing to do with looks.

LOL, I really am a sour note in the orchestra of today's culture ;^), as is my husband. It's a note we don't mind playing, standing aside watching others pursue something, whether it's body art, big cars, designer clothes, or the latest electronic gizmo.

Believe it or not, I'm pretty much like you when it comes to my appearance to others or even caring about it. I also don't color my hair (which is scandalous to my 88 yo grandmother who still dyes her hair red). I paint my nails in the winter months mostly to keep them from chipping away to nothing and to brighten up my attitude during a dreary time of year. I don't paint my toenails...they're just too hard to reach past my menopot.

As for fashionable clothes...I have a few tops that I thought were cute but I don't wear those low rise jeans. Not a pretty sight. I rarely wear make-up since I discovered I'm allergic and well, I never wear it much anyway as I don't like the look much anymore. I change my earrings in both sets of holes about once a month or when I lose one and don't have a set anymore.

I find body art to be mildly amusing in the least and fairly objectionable in the extreme. I can't believe the things that some people will put permanently on their bodies. It's just crazy although my step-son had his baby daughter's infant footprint tattooed on his left shoulder with her name around it. I thought that was kind of special and very sweet.

You're lucky to have come to love yourself as is. Not many women can say that. I don't think of it as being a 'sour note' but more like being comfortable being myself....FINALLY! I've finally come to the place where I don't worry about what other people think. It's been a long, strange trip and I wouldn't go back for the world!

As for the electronic gizmos, I let DH worry about that stuff. I have no idea what a Blackberry is and I don't really care. I'm pretty sure it's just another electronic leash that attaches to your cell phone.

Yes, I know you're kidding. So am I. What's the point in piercing something that nobody but DH and I will see anyway? I don't go around with my navel hanging out (on purpose anyway). Not an attractive sight and I feel very uncomfortable.

The long strange trip... let's just say I can totally relate. Even when I figured out that I didn't fit in, it's taken me the last decade or so to come to just being myself. Won't bore everybody with details!
