Tame Your Talk
James 3:2-12
Determine where your talk steers.
2We all stumble in many ways. If anyone is never at fault in what he says, he is a perfect man, able to keep his whole body in check. 3When we put bits into the mouths of horses to make them obey us, we can turn the whole animal. 4Or take ships as an example. Although they are so large and are driven by strong winds, they are steered by a very small rudder wherever the pilot wants to go.
• When Carolyn and I go to Texas to see Rand and Denise, they take me horseback riding. First thing they do when we get to the stall is to put bit in horse’s mouth so I will have a steering mechanism for the horse.
Horse without bit is wild horse. To tame horse the tamers put bit in mouth for horse to get use to it before they attempt to ride him.
• Clare learning to drive. Every student in this room who is learning how to drive is primarily learning how to steer the car and manage the car so they can safely reach their destinations.
• When a wreck happens it is most often because the driver lost control of the steering of the vehicle or he did not steer clear of collision.
• Your talk is the steering wheel of your life, of the church.
• You can choose to steer toward God or you can crash it.
1. Tame your (im) perfection. (Greek-maturity not sinlessness)
2. Tame your point. (direction for yourself, for the church; on purpose/off purpose)
3. Tame your piloting. (every member has pilot power via his/her talk)
4. Before you start, check your heart.
Determine what your talk sparks.
5Likewise the tongue is a small part of the body, but it makes great boasts. Consider what a great forest is set on fire by a small spark. 6The tongue also is a fire, a world of evil among the parts of the body. It corrupts the whole person, sets the whole course of his life on fire, and is itself set on fire by hell. 7All kinds of animals, birds, reptiles and creatures of the sea are being tamed and have been tamed by man, 8but no man can tame the tongue. It is a restless evil, full of deadly poison.
Verse 6 is source of phrase: “all hell broke loose”
• In California right now, 100,000 residents are displaced from their homes, ten major fires are raging, 3,334 homes have been destroyed, 750, 000 acres have burned, totaling $12 billion in damages and 20 people died.
• Recent rash of arson fires in District and Maryland
• Careless spark or intentional spark
• Verbal arsonists destroy churches, homes, offices, relationships daily.
• Sigfield and Roy-tiger
• Uncontrolled talk is also (Greek) snake venom.
1. Tame your pride. (great boasts, insecurities, fears)
2. Tame your power. (under control can bring warmth and light or out of control will destroy)
3. Tame your purpose. (bring your pupose in line with God’s)
Determine whom your talk serves.
9With the tongue we praise our Lord and Father, and with it we curse men, who have been made in God's likeness. 10Out of the same mouth come praise and cursing. My brothers, this should not be. 11Can both fresh water and salt water flow from the same spring? 12My brothers, can a fig tree bear olives, or a grapevine bear figs? Neither can a salt spring produce fresh water.
• Talk can either serve God and Evil
• Talk displays what I really am on the inside.
• Confessions of recovering “defenseoholic”.
• We praise and curse out of the same mouth. Greek-
Putting people down, verbally hurting/destroying/labeling/lashing out.
• The reason you talk the way you do is the condition of your heart.
• Angry words=angry heart. Depressing words=broken heart. Negative heart = fearful words. Filthy words=impure heart. Too much talk= unsettled heart. Unfriendly words=hard heart. Critical words=bitter heart. Boasting words=insecure heart. Filthy words=impure heart. Defensive words=unsurrendered heart. Judgemental words=guilty heart. Encouraging words=hopeful heart. Gentle words=loving heart. Controlled words=peaceful heart.
1. Tame your personality. (your natural self)
2. Tame your process. (how you think, feel, decide and speak)
3. Tame your product. (what comes out of you, the results of your faith and church)
What I want you to do:
1. Get a new heart. (Psalm 51:10 Create in me a pure heart, O God, and renew a steadfast spirit within me.)
2. Memorize scripture. (Psalm 119:11 I have hidden your word in my heart
that I might not sin against you.)
3. Worship before you speak. (Psalm 95:6 Come, let us bow down in worship,
let us kneel before the LORD our Maker)
