Well, I'm 41. But, I know there are a number of ladies here of various ages who are awesome and have a great deal of information and experience to share.

Personally, I really like the video tapes because I hate treadmills (I get seasick from them) and I can never remember the exercises and what to do otherwise... Kathy Smith is particularly good (she's got a variety of women and men doing exercises with her). There are some tapes out there that are more specifically for older - but that's older as in seniors...

Don't sell yourself short - I know a 70yearold woman who's doing weightlifting and doing an awesome job. Just remember that it involves diet and exercise: aerobic, flexibility and strength training are all components.

Stick around and get to know folks here. I pop in and out but there's great support and great community here. And "interesting" doesn't *begin* to cover it. ;-)

Welcome!

Hi and welcome! You've found a wonderfully supportive and friendly board, here. I'm 41, but the age really ranges... and doesn't matter in terms of what we share like you think it would. Some women here successfully make use of a gym, but I'm not one of them. On a single and modest income, I can't justify it; if I used gift money, I know I'd get tired of driving to and from the gym - I couldn't even keep up a $50 membership at a local community center with a weight room. So my preferred workouts are video tapes, and I stay away from perky or trendy dance routines (no airhead instructors permitted at my house)! I do The Firm workouts - they've got one which has aerobic dance for your cardio system("Cardio Sculpt"), but about half of it is weight-bearing exercises done with free weights. The other tape which I really like of theirs is the "Body Sculpt" tape; it is *all* exercising. I do Tony Little for an abdominal workout, a bit of a loud-mouth until you get used to him (he has other target tapes), and his tapes have the advantage of having a time line for beginners, intermediate and advanced. This past May I started running - something I would've fallen over laughing about if somebody would've told me a year before that I'd be doing. I started out with half-hour outings where I'd walk for 5 minutes, run at a *very* slow pace for 4-5 minutes, then back to walking. In November I ran my first race and I intend to do more. I've slacked off my routines in November and December (Halloween in October, DD's birthday, Thanksgiving, now Christmas - can't cancel any of those so something had to give), but I will get back into it in January.

I also watch what I eat. I tend to go overboard with sweets as snacks, and when there's food around that I like, I'll eat beyond the point where I'm satisfied. I've been successful with choosing healthier snacks and portion control combined with exercising. Does weight just start packing on? Fact is, none of us here can no longer drop 5 pounds in 10 days like we used to in our 20s. We're here because we realize that to get a program work, it *has* to be a committment, not just to weight loss, but to health. Being here on this board is not a case of "misery loves company", LOL!, but instead one of support and encouragment to follow through on positive changes for a healthier lifestyle.

Hope to see you post regularly!

Welcome to the board! I'm probably the oldest member here (54, chronologically), but most of the time I don't feel it. I do have some disc problems I have to work around, and I have been pretty bad about working out a lot of this year. I must say that after I turned 50, I noticed a big change in my body. As someone who never had to watch her weight and used to have 4's taken up, it's a real shock to suddenly not have a waist any more. I am a carb craver and love sweets, so that doesn't help.

I was doing great on the South Beach Diet last spring and summer, then fell off the wagon. Need to get back on. Also, I plan to start going back to the Y for some cardio and weight training. I don't like classes and don't seem to stick with videos, although Teresa Tapp has some fantastic workouts that make double duty out of a lot of moves (She has an iVillage board and

First let me welcome you to the board. We have people of different ages on the board on a regular basis. I just turned 40 last March and I have been here for a couple years anyway. We're still waiting for Patty's 40th birthday I think... ;-)

Yes, unfortunately, our metabolisms start to slow down as we approach middle age. We have to eat less and work harder to maintain what has been the 'norm' for us for many years. I never really had any weight complaints until peri-menopause reared it's ugly head. But here I am.

The best thing you can do for exercise is whatever you love enough to keep doing it on a regular basis. Since you say you've never really exercised before, you have a lot of things to choose from to try out. Personally, I'm a huge fan of Jazzercise, but that may be a mental thing...DH keeps telling me I'm not right in the head. I also like walking, biking, hiking, TaeBo and weight lifting. And I attend one yoga class a week. Just remember to start slowly and if you have any health concerns, talk with your doctor about it. I'm a charter member of the Too-Much-Too-Soon club and I have the shin splints and tendonitis to prove it.

Welcome again. Good to have you aboard.

Hi, Meg - Welcome "aboard". First note of business - no old fogies here (wink)! Fogie-ism is a state of mind, and I don't think any of us think of ourselves that way - at least most of the time, and we forbid you to think of yourself that way. That's the only rule of the board. Everything else is up for discussion, friendly disagreement, whatever.

I'm 40+. I kiddingly subtract a year from each birthday - as of Christmas Eve, I'm a virtual 33....

For workouts, DH and I bought high-quality home gym equipment a few years ago and have never regretted the decision to plop that money down - better than repeatedly buying gym memberships that founder in a fog of good intentions. The stuff is in the basement and it's used for the purpose it was intended rather than as valets for clothing. It consists of a motorized treadmill with auto incline and a lot of pre-set programs as well as set-your-own; a weight machine with a leg press attachment, high-, mid-, and low-level pullies, leg extension and curl, and overhead lat bars and chest press. We also have several dumbbells of various weights, and DH uses a crunch board and an ab contraption that is a simple wheel with handles attached like an axle that has worked wonders for his waistline (I'm afraid of hurting my back with it).

I do 4 solid workouts a week (2 weights); I've managed as many as 6 a week (3 weights) in the past, but work has really hampered me in achieving that goal consistently throughout the fall.

I started following the South Beach Diet on September 14; I've lost 18 lbs so far, and have 16 to go to reach goal. I won't go on about it here, but there is a really active board for it that has two new active and committed cls and members at various stages in the program, some outspoken, some careful and tactful, but all full of ideas and information about what has worked for them and what hasn't. So far, I'm swearing by it.

Welcome, Meg, and stay with us. You're going to like it here. This board is a big reason why I've stuck with exercising.
