Margie - Big Dig News....

Hi, Margie - If you're interested, you might want to take a look at boston.com for a progress report on the Central Artery project. Yeah, it's a financial nightmare, but the elevated sections are finally being dismantled and the view of the city looking toward the waterfront is changing as we speak. Most of the dismantling that's happening now is right down the road from my mom's condo. What a difference.....

Margie - Whether your trip up here is a continuation or a separate journey, I hope what brings you back is a happy occasion. Looking forward to meeting you in Asheville, also!

The noise (not to mention construction dust) of the Big Dig has been a constant for my mom - but the project managers have mitigation procedures in place so that the neigborhoods in the path of construction have peace and quiet at night. The big push is on to get most of the thing dismantled before the DNC in Boston this coming July/August; that could make night removal of the overhead structure a fact of life for the next few months.

The high cost of the project has been a constant drumbeat up here, too. All the politicians jockeying for credit and ducking blame - typical. Keeps talk radio going for sure. Whether the "engineering marvel" that the entire project is has been worth the cost is for us to decide after traffic is flowing normally and commercial activities in and around NE improve. The one thing that's obvious is that the look of the city would be just as awful as it used to be if this project had not been "tunnelized", which is where the largest costs were incurred.

Enough about that.

Happy New Year to you, Margie - you certainly deserve it!

Donna
