Remember me? Need to vent...

Another new year, another lack of progress. I'm so frustrated and angry at myself, I'm seriously considering eating only strained tofu and going (even deeper!) into hock for a Bowflex Ultra (which won't fit into my rented room).

I've been fighting a resurgence of severe clinical depression lately, and it's brought with it new cravings that are ferocious! I know how stupid this is going to sound, but sometimes it's as if something terrible will happen if I don't eat whatever-it-is! The more common variant is that if I don't eat it now, I'll never be able to get it again (ridiculous, of course -- enchiladas, dark chocolate and Brie cheese won't suddenly cease to exist).

Does anybody else have these problems? If so, what do you do for them? I'd appreciate any ideas anyone has.

I gotta go with Phyllis on this one. Get thee to a doctor and get some help. It's ok to ask for help. It doesn't make you weak or stupid or useless. I had some serious problems with depression until I went to my doctor and got it taken care of. I spent a little time in therapy and I take an anti-depressant every day. It's no big deal now. I still have my moments that are hard to deal with, but the emotional eating is practically a thing of the past and most days I feel pretty good about myself. Go get some help, you won't regret it. Good luck.

Hey Mary - I'd wondered if you were still around. I think you've identified your problem and how eating and bouts with depression seem to be tied together. You realize it doesn't make sense, but you're not sure how to turn away from those impulses... and I'll also echo Phyllis and Lori. There are ways to get those chemicals in balance, and sometimes it takes a prescription. There are ways to deal more positively with your frustrations, and sometimes it takes an expert. Is putting money on a Bow Flex a good idea when you're not sure what direction you need to go in? It can't help you if you're not prepared to make committments regarding your diet or how often you'll exercise. Right now, I'd venture to say you'd benefit more from seeking help, and also from a gym that centers on helping people like yourself - when I had my heart arrhythmia diagnosed, I visited the gym on the heart clinic's premises. The clients were average folks, just looking to get into a program, not people who've turned fitness into a religion, and so it wasn't nearly as intimidating as a Gold's Gym or New Life Fitness or a host of others. Thing is, I would've never known about that place had I not been to a doctor. I'm sure there's a solution out there for you, and I'll wager a caring doctor will have advice.
