School Closings.....

School administrators have done a very smart thing up here - they've already announced school closings for tomorrow all around Massachusetts. First non-snow day school closing I've ever heard of. Boston schools are still open - but all the abutting towns are closing. Hope the Boston kids, teachers, staff, bus drivers, and street crossing guards can catch a break also.

Because of the cold and wind?

Ouch! It must be cold there! We were complaining when we hit the teens here!

Right now we are sitting in the low to mid fifties and the buds are starting to pop! I did my lunch dishes with the kitchen window open and a short sleeve t-shirt on. The boys and I are just heading off to the park for some fresh air!

Yes. Apparently the diesel fuel that the buses use congeals in the extreme cold, a lot of buses never got out of the gate and many kids had extra-long waits at the bus stops until their parents could get to them to drive them to school (which I would think they'd consider anyway under these conditions). I think part of the issue is closing the schools down for an extra day - they've only used 2 snow days so far - and saving some money on heating costs. With Martin Luther King Day on Monday, that'll give them 4 straight days where heat can be lowered to the minimum needed to keep pipes from bursting.

I can't imagine this, but tomorrow is a potentially record-breaking temperature day for Boston. Wanna come visit?

We're having our own freeze-out here! It was so cold last night, it was too cold to snow. It all evaporated before it could hit the ground. Going to the single digits.

Stay toasty. I'm thankful for my warm house, flannel jammies and sheets and my warm slippers (not to mention Starbucks ;)

Sassy

Factoring in the wind, temperatures of -40F to -30F for Friday morning are being forecast. I always thought of Canada as the great cold north, but I've learned that your area is a little bit less extreme in winter than the rest of the country.

I've officially turned into a sissy wuss. I just told my boss that it's time for me to take a vacation day. I can stay home, keep the laundry going (and the water moving through the pipes), make sure the oil tank doesn't hit empty, and dress in 2 layers of sweatshirts and sweatpants if I have to. Actually, it's a good time to take off - no deadlines looming large, and lots of people staying out anyway with the school closings. After my boss stopped laughing at me and calling me a sissy, he wished me a good weekend.

Time to start layering for the walk to the train - hope it runs better tonight.

I think you're smart! I can't imagine children waiting out in that weather for a bus. I don't even have Rob wait in the 50's. I know, he's spoiled. Actually, I think it's that I get so cold I assume he will be too. We take him to school in the morning anyway, and he rides the bus home in the afternoon.

I hope everyone up there is stocked up on warm clothes, food, and other necessities like we do for hurricanes down here. Never hurts to be prepared.
