Could somebody explain to me the physiology of water retention - aside that the physiologies most affected belong to women, that is?

It's usually a fluctuation in hormone balance, which can happen due to either a menstrual cycle or any stage of menopause of perimenopause. It can also be an after effect of years of yo yo dieting. Whichever is the culprit, it's a pain in the butt, isn't it? There are certain foods that help with elimination, like celery, etc. and you can do a google search for all the ones that will help, along with certain vitamins like the B-complex vitamins that will help, also.

I swell sometimes, too...and I HATE it.

With mine, it's definitely menstrual - I've had water weight as long as I can remember around "that time" -

I do the same thing. When I was in my 20's I was a yo-yo dieter and also went thru a period where I was bulimic and the result was years of water retention. I used to take prescription diueretics for it, but finally stopped and looked for more natural remedies. I still swell sometimes, and it shows up in my hands, feet, and eyes mostly. When I am swollen it looks like my eyelids have completely disappeared. I hate it.
