I haven't posted here for a while. I have a question. I'm 40+1 years old and about 50 lbs overweight. I'm having problems with my knees(Runs in the family) So I know how important it is that I loose the weight. i love to use my bowflex but I know I need some aerobic exercise also. Does anybody have any suggestions on something that would be easy on my knees? Would the Firm be too harsh? My pain is primarily going up and down stairs

Hi, Laurie - I'm not a Firm follower, but I would think that their video that uses the step might cause you some problems. Do you do leg work with your Bowflex? Strengthening all the muscles around your knees might help you before you take on anything more strenuous. I find squats (holding dumb-bells or not) to be more knee-friendly than lunges. Do you like to just walk? Good shoes, the right form and posture, and a clear path are all you need. I've been using my treadmill a lot this winter while it's been so cold. When spring comes, I've got a new walking buddy at work and we're going to be getting out at lunchtime a lot more than I did the past year (my closest friend at work has a bad back and asthma and is quite a bit heavier than she should be, so she doesn't like walking on concrete and around the city too much). My DH is gearing up for a lot of evening walks with me this spring and summer. Do you have kids at home who would be willing to join you on evening or weekend morning walks? How about your hubby? Got a dog who might like to join you for a nice walk? Do you have space for a treadmill in a place that would be pleasant to use it - like with a tv or music source nearby?

Just some ideas. Walking is the best way for anyone to start moving. You don't have to learn anything new, you don't have to be especially coordinated, and you don't have to go at a mad pace. Just 20 minutes to start, and build up speed/distance/time slowly. It'll help a bit; you still have to watch how much food you take in and make sure you work hard enough to burn it off.

Good luck!

I agree with Donna on the walking.I think it's a great exercise for anyone.I've done the FIRM once or twice and it did bother my knees.I run and that doesn't cause me any problems so I was concerned when the FIRM did.I think you should check with your dr about eating and exercise plans just to make sure you get off to a good healthy start.Hope you'll post with us more.
