Deb - spring shoe report from Rome

I am happy to report that this spring's shoe styles include, not only the standard pointytoe spikeheels from heell... but also, ballerina-slipper round-toe styles. There they were, in suede, patent, even scales... and the colors! Lime green and orange and yellow predominated, along with pink, red, and the more sober black and tan and navy... With straps and buckles and bows and little decorations... and reasonable flat or low heels that you can actually *WALK* in. I was astounded.

I bought a pair of black, soft leather with crisscross straps over the top of the foot, and wore them quite happily with my red silk dress and a pair of stay-up fishnet stockings... A new lambswool shawl with crocheted edges to keep me warm, and a pair of the softest red leather gloves... And him in his brushed velvet taupe suit with black silk shirt and not-quite-red tie... A lovely Valentine ensemble for a wonderful Valentine weekend...

I'm so glad, I'm so glad, I'm glad, I'm glad, I'm GLAD - that that clunky elevator shoes are getting ushered out the door finally. BTDT in the 70s, didn't follow the trend this time around. When they were being reintroduced a number of years ago, designers said they "anchor" longer skirts, but I think they just draw attention to feet, it looks like you supersized your shoe order. Not necessarily wild about the long pointed shoes which have't totally caught on (I think they also make a size 8 shoe look like a size 10), but at least we've got some heels that look elegant again, and flat shoes won't look like granny or nursing shoes.

I've been wearing the same shoes for years because nothing I liked was available. The flood gates are opening... look out, Closet!

sorry - no photos. the camera is on order...

we mostly walked (and walked and walked some more, then climbed some stairs and walked even more... for HOURS) we took taxis a few times... including one night when we were "trastevere" - across the Tiber river from Rome central, and Alex looked at me, and took pity on me... We had walked, literally, from 10am, until 10pm... with *very* brief stops for lunch and dinner...

One of those vacations you need to rest up after... By Sunday night, my poor lower back was complaining *SO* loudly... and I was very very very glad to get into the train and just sit for 2 hours straight... ah, heaven. ;-)

speaking of photos - any photos yet of you in your lovely red dress?

Yep...but that dress kept getting BIGGER and bigger on top as the night wore on.
