The Power to Love

1 Corinthians 13:1-8

First Corinthians 13 has sometimes been called the “love chapter” of the Bible because it explains how divine love, or “agape love” manifests itself in the life of the believer. When we have God’s divine love flowing through us, we are tapped into an inexhaustible resource that enables us to turn our focus from ourselves to others. Where does this agape love begin? It starts when we place our trust in Jesus Christ as our personal Savior. In other words, we must come to the realization that our sin has separated us from God and that the penalty for sin is death. (Romans 6:23) Then, by accepting Jesus’ substitutionary death on the cross as payment in full for our sin-debt, we are “born again” (John 3:3), and the Holy Spirit comes to indwell us. (John 14:16-17) With God’s Spirit living within us, His love starts to flow through us to other people.

Once that happens, watch how all of life begins to change. You will have the capacity to walk in the freedom that only love can provide. Where love is present, there is an awesome power within you to live above whatever life may cast your way.

God wants all of us to be walking fountains of His love, allowing “agape” to overflow to other people who are hurting all around us. And the wonderful thing about God’s love is that, the more we give it away, the more the supply is replenished. It is the eternal gift of God the Father that keeps His children free and brings Him glory.
