Today's Question

For a long time now, I have struggled with finding my "purpose" and envy people who clearly know what their passion is. I have read many books on this subject, but am not really any closer to defining my purpose. Do you have any suggestions as to how I might finally "get it"?

This is a great question and unfortunately there is no easy answer. Often we don’t find our purpose, but rather our purpose finds us. We can do exercises, such as the ones I offered in my free 10 Day-plan, that may bring us closer to our purpose or even help us find our purpose but these exercises may not work for everyone. For someone in your situation, the key is to be open so that your purpose can find you. You can’t force purpose. Spending 10 hours of day looking at job descriptions will not bring you any closer to your purpose than asking a career counselor to tell you what your purpose is. First I think it’s important to identify several purposes in your life. It may not be your ultimate purpose but you may discover that your purpose is to make a difference each day, raise healthy positive children and enjoy life every day. My 10-day plan will help you do this. Then as you start living a certain way with more every day purpose you will become more open to finding your ultimate purpose and passion. For example, if you take a job that is more in alignment with your every day purpose I believe it will be easier to discover your ultimate purpose rather than wasting energy and time on a career that does not serve you mentally, emotionally or spiritually. Ask yourself what you are attracted to. What kinds of activities, jobs, and people? Look at your life—both past and present. Are there any signs you can observe that seemed to be pointing you in a certain direction? For example, 2 years ago, when I looked at my life and asked myself what I was born to do, I noticed that I always loved reading self help books and hearing speakers and inspiring others. I remembered that when I was 22 I sent Les Brown (Author of “Live your Dreams”) a letter telling him I wanted to do what he did. Remembering my past and thinking about what attracted me helped me decide to become a writer and speaker. Now, every day I know I am doing what I was born to do. I believe we all have a destiny and we can choose our destiny by looking at the signs in our life, both past and present, and follow them to our destiny. Let these signs point you in the right direction but again don’t force them. If you believe your purpose and destiny will find you, they will. Every day say the following, “I am ready to know my true purpose. When the time is right, I accept that my purpose will find me. Pray for Guidance, everyday. Then look for the signs that point you in a certain direction. For instance you may get fired. Don’t get upset. Look at it as a sign that your destiny is calling. You may get a call from a friend to go to a seminar that feels right. Listen to that feeling and go. Every day we are being presented with signs that help us choose our purpose and destiny. We just have to open to the signs, get rid of the fear that blocks these signs, and trust that we will discover our purpose when the time is right. We can choose to ignore these signs or we can use them to create the life we were born to live. It has worked for me and a number of people I have coached. If you want to talk, I’d love to spend a few minutes on the phone with you explaining how this all works. I don’t charge for this so just call me at 904.285.6842. I want to help you find your purpose. Best wishes - Jon.
