Today's issue of The Boston Globe has a Health/Science section that focuses on the rise of statins to lower cholesterol even in people with no other risk factors for heart disease. Check it out if you have time or interest in the subject. Quite informative. www.bostonglobe.com

Thanks for sharing that article Donna. Very interesting. I have yet to go on statins, but since I'm finding it so difficult to shed this extra poundage I'm packing. I'm thinking more and more that it is probably the way to go for me, much as I hate the thought of pills!

The part that caught my attention is that once people go on statins, they develop a false sense of comfort and think their weight isn't an issue anymore. The LDL problem might be solved, but the statin-taker hasn't done a thing to improve his or her nutrition or reduce weight, so the risks of diabetes or joint pain and arthritis and heaven knows what else still remain.

Hit that treadmill! Lift those weights! Chase those kids! Walk that dog! Eat those veggies! What did I miss???

Have a good one!

Thanks, Donna. Information that I need, for sure. I'm due to get mine checked again. One year ago, I was borderline high, with a total cholesterol of 228 and only a reading of 46 for my HDL cholesterol. I'm going to a different doctor this year and I'm bringing my Prevention.com Cholesterol Tracker with me - by golly they WILL help me update my chart. Sometimes, as alot of us know, it's like pulling teeth to get doctors to share information. I called my current doctor's office after the test last year & they were so evasive about the LDL and Triglycerides - never game me the numbers. They said those numbers weren't the ones they were concerned about. I just want the whole picture and on paper so I can compare each year's progress.

Some doctors don't give their patients enough credit for intelligence and common sense. Maybe they just don't take into consideration each patient's understanding of their specific health challenges. Some people are no smarter than a bar of soap and ignore signs that are flashing in front of them in neon, while others, like you, me and the people on this board, do understand them and are trying to make the changes they need to to achieve healthy benefits. Personally, I'm blessed to have two doctors who don't take my questions and challenges as a personal affront (and we all know my - ummm - tact is not my strongest point). I don't think I'd still be going to your current doctor if he was that evasive with me about MY health, either. Good for making the change in a tough health-care environment. And good luck with the new dr.
