A friend of mine said she asked her doctor about taking niacin for lowering her cholesterol and he agreed that it is used for that purpose (of course, we have to ask doctors for this type of remedy as they usually don't volunteer information on alternative meds!). She has started taking 1000 mg. of the niacin (she has to ask for it at the pharmacy) and one aspirin per night. The doctor also prescribed soy to relieve the flushing. Here is a link from Mayo Clinic on using niacin for lowering cholesterol:

I'm getting ready to ask my doctor about this too!

Thanks so much for posting that piece of info., Grace! I will definitely print this out and ask my doctor to treat me with this for lowering my cholesterol! I'd rather take this than the Lipitor or that other stuff. It sure is great to be able to come to this board for information and advice when I need it!
