went out to get the mail and as I stepped out the front door, there sunning itself between the young palm tree (You can barely see it in the flowerbed picture) and the entry was about a 3' long black racer!!! Don't know if it's my "buddy" from last year or a new one, but we eyeballed each other a while, then I went to get the mail. When I came back, it had turned around to make its get-a-way, so I bent down to look a little closer. When I did, it took off like lightning, which scared me and made me jump even though it was going the other way. So, it is out lurking in the flowerbed where I work all the time. I've been kind of keeping an eye out lately, but it still caught me by surprise, because I didn't expect it to be so close and in the open like that. Rob and a friend said they saw one out by the back deck about a week ago. Guess they like this weather as much as we do.

For years we didn't see any around here, then suddenly last year we started seeing the black racer. I think he's a flower fan, or maybe he just likes all the lizards and bugs the mulch around

See, there's one more reason to stay inside and leave the natural world outside....be careful, Rhonda. I know he just startled you. I shudder to think of it doing anything else.

S(he) is usually around the stretch of hedge, or peaking out of the top of it (!) under the window in the foreground. My computer is in front of the second window, so I can look out and see the flowers, butterflies, etc., while I'm working on it. I did see a black-and-yellow butterfly at the same time I saw the snake.
