Both have a different focus so it depends on what you are looking for.

Pilates is wonderful for safely strengthening the core body muscles from the torso to knees. It has proper healthy breathing and is not too terribly expensive to get into.

Yoga has a much broader scope, and unless you define which branch of yoga you are looking into, you can't define the focus. Yoga can be very athletic and dynamic and leaving your heart rate going and body sweating. It can be easy and gentle enough for arthritic patients and pregnant moms. It can help you wake up, or go to sleep at night. What do you want? There is a yoga branch for your desires.

So, what do you want from yoga or Pilates?

Both have their merits. For overall conditioning, I prefer yoga mainly because I have more experience with it. Pilates is fine too, I just haven't done much of it.

The focus for yoga is very broad and you can get whatever you need from it. I like the Rodney Yee videos (from Gaiam and/or livingarts) when I use a video.

Hmm, you could say I was corn-fused. To the untrained eye, they look so similar…Yoga Branches? Hmm, nope can’t define it but thanks for your input.

I like both for different reasons. There are some similarities. Breathing is very important for both. If you want to really get confused, there is even yogilates and you can get a video for that.

I am getting into Pilates now since I am teaching it. I thought it was "easier" than Yoga, but not anymore. I can't do many of the yoga postures right now with my foot. Pilates can be done on the mat for the whole workout.

Pilates vidoes...I hear Stott is the best. I do have Ana Caban's Living Arts Intermediate, Jennifer Kries The Method Precision Toning, Living Art Pilates Conditioning for weight loss, and Windsor Pilates (not my favorite). There are some good books too...Pilates Body in Motion and The Pilates Body...got them at Border's.

I am looking for Karen Voights Pilates..she uses the ring and I have one of those and you really feel it with that. I got the ring for under $20 at Ulta beauty supply store.

Yoga videos...I have Karen Voight Yoga Sculpt...love that one..., The Crunch Yoga video, Yoga Fit with Beth Shaw. Michele Batz is certified in this and I like their videos. Michele is also co cl of the Yoga board here on ivillage. You can find them and get more info at Yogafit.com. I have Yoga for weight loss too. Rodney Yee seems to be the favorite of most of the Yoga Enthusiasts.

Kari Anderson has Angles, Lines and Curves I and II. They are crossovers...ballet, yoga and pilates. I feel like

Good info Rhonda...I was hoping you would give your input to this question. I have heard from the Pilates instructor that I am working with that Winsor is really not a good one and almost has to be called Winsor Pilates because it is too fast and her version. I really didn't like the DVDs..too many things in it that a beginner could get hurt on. It should not be attempted without someone knowing what they are doing right there to help you.

It is hard to find good videos for the average person.

I loved working on the apparatus, because it added variety and interest, but it's just a different means to the same end. Sure do miss studying with Jacki, but it was 290 miles round trip and quite expensive for 2-hr. private sessions. All good things must come to an end...
