Scene from "The Passion" - opinions?

As I mentioned in another post, The Cus and I saw "The Passion" on Saturday. MIL had seen it a week or two ago and didn't join us, though when we got back home, the three of us talked about it. One scene that she and her Bible Study friends have discussed the significance of is where Satan is holding that huge baby with the evil adult face. They're at a loss on it; my unenlightened thought is that Satan is making a mockery of the Virgin birth - the pose did resemble the traditional Madonna and Child portraits.

In talking with a few others prior to seeing the movie, I understand there were a number of scenes from the Catholic Bible, and my mom who was raised Catholic shared some Catholic rituals/beliefs which I recognized in the movie. With the other appearances of Satan in the movie, I don't know if that vision was taken from Catholic references or not, but MIL and I are curious as to what y'all thought about that scene if you've been to the movie.

I heard Mel Gibson quoted when asked about that scene, that it was really simple, he wanted to portray Satan as one who would not even abandon his own child (shown by how he adoringly looked at his child,) while Christ was abandoned by His father for that time on the cross. I guess to help the viewer feel how completely alone Christ felt.

I haven't seen the movie yet, does that explanation make sense to you?

That explanation makes perfect sense.
