Woo-hoo! Fantastic feeling!

Well, the 2004 Women's Heart & Sole is in the record books. Woke up at about 5:40am, had a biscuit with Egg Beaters and a veggie patty, a glass of water, cup of ovaltine, and headed to the race area. Got there early for good parking, and chatted with other racers while enjoying the music. It was warm and sunny, not a cloud in the sky, with relatively low humidity and an occasional breeze. Had my new CD player with me, and listened to a Christian rock CD for inspiration. Along with the 5 mile run, there were 2 walk events with over 800 participants for all events. Talk about inspiring - all women save for a few men from the Army who were running to encourage the women in their unit.

Felt *very* good at the beginning, making a 9'40" 1st Mile and something similar after 2 miles. Between mile 2 & 3, though, was the main hill - on a main throughway downtown with no shade trees, and we were running right into the sun. It's not as steep as the hill in my neighborhood that I most often walk, but it's longer. Yet I managed to run that whole stretch. Might've walked 5 paces at the water break just before Mile 3 and used most of the water to douse my face! That was the only time I felt like I wasn't as ready as I thought. The rest of the way was just mild terrain, and much more shady! Last mile was either flat or downhill, with a phenomenal downhill run the last 3 blocks. My time, 51'06" or a 10'14" pace. The Cus, Allison and Mom started looking for me in earnest at around 50 minutes, and were surprised to see me that quickly. I've run just a tad faster in my neighborhood, but only when I avoided the hill and for 4 miles. I was *very* pumped, no shakes afterwards like last race, no aches. Even my kinked hip cooperated aside from a few yards between miles 2 & 3. I don't even feel that right now.

The results are already in: I placed 168 out of 264 runners, 25th out of 38 in my age group. I'm EXTREMELY happy with how I did, better in time and placement than last my last run and much-much better mentally and physically. I look forward to many more such races! Here's the results page for the race http://www.carolinamarathon.org/heartsole04RESULTS.tx . Also check out the results of other events at http://www.carolinamarathon.org/heartres.html . There aren't any pictures yet, too early, but when they start appearing, I'll let you know. There might be some from the event on one of the local news sites in the next day or two.

Thanks for all your support!
