The new job!

As some of you saw with my post yesterday I am not sure about the new job. I guess it is unfair to make a desision after only one day. I will give it a few weeks and see how things progress. I will say I was not overly impressed with the office itself. Its the back half of an old house and the carpets are run down, he has ALL his files in those cardboard boxes because he refers to them all the time. There must be 30 boxes against the wall, under tables, and under the desk. The phone is on his desk, but when he is there he answers it. But when he is not I do, hence the around my desk, through the doorway, around the client chairs, and around his desk. Banged my elbow going through the doors in a hurry. The front half of the office allows the gals to smoke, and even with their door closed and mine you can still smell it. With our door closed it feels very cut off from the rest of the world. Not many phone calls, or visitors. I thought his manner was not the greatest. He showed me some things for about45 minutes and got me started on work, then he left. He was gone from 10 to 3 and considering all his stuff is new to me, I was feeling slightly over whelmed and no one was there to help me. But I did get it all done and I thought I did a good job, he was hard to read, so I do not know. Lunch time he was gone and I did not want to leave the office open and unattended so thank goodness I brought a yogurt and a diet soda. Ate at my desk, and then went back to work. My girl friend popped in for a few minutes and she was surprised with what he left me to do. Then the postage, he is cheap. He had me weigh the letter and put the exact amount on it. Then when I was leaving he asked me to drop it off, but one of the things was a certified letter which required me to go into the post office. I missed Katie coming home and well lets say it was not good. She expected to meet me home. I will tell him that from now on if he needs me to stop at the post office I need to give myself 15 minutes and I will leave at 3:15. No reason to start doing this on my time. Aunt Flo showed up yesterday, which I am sure makes my mood not the greatest so I will give it time. Hubby cleaned up the entire dinner and kitchen last night and he made me tea this morning. I guess he has learned to read me better then I think. Well today is my Steve office day. I need to get dressed, dry my hair, do the make-up, and get these lunches made. Hope you all have a great day and thanks for thinking of me.

Hmm... I can see why you chose the icon you did. Too, you're comparing this new job to one where things were organized, the office was cozy and the boss incredibly interactive and complimentary. Not every job or boss is like that. It could be an opportunity for you to get some organization in there once you get used to it. ...Then again, this guy could be so cheap that he doesn't care about streamlining to make the office run more smoothly.

The cig smoke might(*) bother me after a while if I couldn't escape it. The job I had for 7+ years had smokers, including the boss, but the smokers were in their own section separate from me. When we moved to our own building, I and another non-smoker were on a different ventilation system even. Can't say the same for the ladies in the Payables area who had to put up with it. I say "might" bother me because I did grow up in a home with a smoker (my dad), and have put up with coworkers who smoked before. To read the anti-smoking literature, I should be suffering some pretty serious side effects from the second hand smoke, but despite being around it most of the day for all those years, I'm healthier these days for doing something on my own. If it's not filling my office or space, I can probably tolerate more than I believe. Still, wouldn't want somebody puffin' right next to me - that'd be overload.

Hey, Deb! Good luck with that new job - I can see how difficult it would be to get acclimated to that after the one with Steve! EEEEWWW!!! on the smoke! I just finished training a new Realtor on her keypad system/put her thru a semi-orientation on the computer which lasted about an hour & I could tell she is a smoker. She reeked & I was miserable. Sure enough, as she walked out to her vehicle, she lit one up. I used to smoke, but boy am I extremely sensitive to it now & YUCKO! I am SO glad I gave it up!!

So sorry to hear the fist day on the job was so disappointing. I guess you have to make sure ask about smoking these days before taking a job. I am so surprised your boss is so unorganized. I always thought that keeping things in a filing cabinet made it easier to get at it than rummaging through boxes to find it. Good for you for standing up for yourself about getting home in time and not doing work related stuff on your time.

Hope things get better. Good luck!

Hi, Deb - It never gives you a good feeling about a workplace when it feels like it's being run on a shoestring budget. As for the boss, sounds like he's not one of those rah-rah types who'll offer encouragement or thanks. Give it a few weeks and don't make any decisions while your hormones are in charge. In all likelihood, your instincts are right and your time there will be short, but it's another opportunity to make some money and get more experience under your belt. And good for you for standing up for yourself - that few minutes of helping out on your time has a funny way of expanding or becoming expected if you let it.
