because I must really just be getting old. My bones are achin' so bad, and I'm sounding like a bowl of Rice Krispies with all the snap crackle pop going on. I've had to really slow down the walking outside and cut down on the mileage and the same thing with the treadmill. Lately it just seems that even the walking and for that matter anything I do makes me pay the price for a day or too. I'm trying to find things that are gentle to the aching bones and if I slow it down anymore it doesn't seem like I'm getting the benefit I should out of it. The same thing with weights and hearing the cracking and popping in my elbows and shoulders. I sat for about an hour straight at my desk today and when I got up I looked and felt like an old woman. Maybe I just started this whole trying to get into shape thing a little bit too late into my 40's and now that I've reached the 50's it's just all catching up with me. I guess I really should go see a doctor and see what he says but another doctor.... So any suggestions, ideas, thoughts for this old gray mare. I'm just trying to maintain my weight, help out with keeping my bp under control and help me to stay as healthy as possible.

I'm wondering how much the menopause issue plays into this?Could you talk to your gyn about it? Maybe ask if a joint supplement would be a good thing for you. Also maybe try getting more omega 3s in your diet?I have a book called the Hormone Connection and will get it out to see if it says anything.

Susan, I hear what you're saying! As you may know, I have a lot of joint and disk issues, so I have to really watch it too. Aqua aerobics were wonderful and are often recommended for people with arthritis and problems like that. Cycling is good, low stress exercise, but I highly recommend padded bike shorts and a gel seat, even then your derriere will take time to get used to it if you bike very far. Cycling gloves are also good. Pilates and Yoga are good low stress workouts, and walking on something softer than a sidewalk is good. I was surprised at how much more stressful to shins, back, feet, etc., it was to walk on concrete sidewalks than even the asphalt roads. If you have grassy or dirt

Susan: I know what you mean about the rice krispies in the joints.

Thanks for your suggestions Ladies. I definintely do think that the menopause thing is tied into this. In fact I think a lot of the problems I've been experiencing over the past year are all tied together. I guess my biggest problem is that there isn't any place immediately around my house to go bike riding. I have a brand new bike complete with gel seat that I got 2 years ago (my DS was actually my salesman!) and he's still after me when I'm going to ride. There is just too much traffic around here. I have to put the bike rack on my car, put the bike on the rack and then take me, the car and the bike to a path or down to the boardwalk, same thing with walking-too much of the burbs around here. I've been thinking about yoga or pilates but I think I really need to take a class but I want to make sure I get into a place that will teach it the right way and I'm just not sure about the expense or the time since my energy level and time constraints of the evening hours. I am going to talk to the doctor on my next visit about a possible supplement-just want to make sure it goes along with the various medications that I'm currently taking. It sure isn't easy getting old!

Susan - A little late to this thread. Is there a high school with an accessible track nearby? Even within a short driving distance? A couple of the local schools near us have great tracks that you actually can get on to. Those tracks can be easier on your legs and feet than sidewalks.

Malls are also great places to walk and many have distances listed from point-to-point and log books where you can record your distances. I see a number of people with their walking shoes on early before the mall stores open and during lunch, as well as during the day.

I'm with you on seeing another doctor . . . ARGH!@!! I'm in the same boat, Susan. I can't seem to do any cardio without twisting my ankle or putting something out of joint! I'm a creaky thing, too! I take a multi, but am seriously considering taking those supplements for joints.

Good luck!

Susan late in replying but it looks like you got some sound ideas here. I like what Patti said about the track. I discovered that a few weeks ago and was amazed how nice the track feels on my feet and legs. Something worth considering. The yoga is a great idea and I am sure there are tons of videos to rent or buy just to get you started. I think what you do everyday is just part of your body and life. I guess menopause does play a role but just think how you would feel if you did no exercise. Talk with your doc about a joint supplement as a few have also suggested. Hang in there.
