Is this outrageous or what?

Yesterday, I had to get a TB shot as per volunteering at a hospital when out-of-the-blue the nurse asked me if I had children to which I said no and then she said, well you probably don’t donate blood EITHER. I was just so stunned that I find myself speechless and this doesn’t end yet. I brought in my 1998 medical record which shows I had a Measles shot which I did for a State College and that wasn’t good enough for her! She said I have no proof of childhood vaccinations and that I had 3 weeks to return with proof of immunization or I could not volunteer. It didn’t matter that I was scheduled to work with computers – not patients. Furthermore, she said the hospital would not pay for any shots needed. I am a U.S. citizen and remember all the school shots but I don’t have those kinds of records from the 1960’s – do any of you? It really concerns me about having too many antigens that may compromise my immune system. I am so upset…:^(

Deb, I don't have those records, either (but I'm guessing my mom does somewhere - probably the bottom drawer of her bureau, if that's still where she keeps her files about my sister and me). I never thought a volunteer not working with patients would have such problems getting approved. Maybe hospitals are worse disease breeding places than we all recognize, and this is how the hospital protects itself in the event that an employee or volunteer should contract a dangerous disease and try to hold the hospital responsible.

(Her attitude about you not having kids ticks me off, but that's another rant. And where does she get off making it seem like donating or not donating blood is a measure of your worth as a human being?)

Even with the hospital's policy to protect itself and patients, her attitude was totally out of line. Hard to believe someone like that is charged with caring for people!! I have no clue where any of my childhood records are. I mean, they were required for school, and I got through school, so that should prove something.

I'm not a candidate for donating blood either even though I do have children. I did donate once before I found out that I have a Factor 11 deficiency. I do not consider myself subhuman because of it. ;-)

Well, if they make it too difficult for you to do your volunteer work it will certainly be their loss, and I'm sure there are other places that would be thrilled to have your services.

Good luck and hugs!

Rhonda

Donna,

Guess I should be shackled and thrown into a dungeon until I give blood or birth whichever comes first LOL!

Lori,

Surprised she didn’t ask my age, orientation, or other conditions. I was rethinking the volunteer thing but decided to talk to the person who heads volunteer services just to verify requirements. Then I’ll make a decision. Unfortunately, I have to wait until tomorrow. Thanks for listening while I vent…

You'll have company - I fit her sub-human species definition, too!

Rhonda,

Yeah, that Nurse is a piece of work. Figure she must have more problems than I care to know about. Am trying not to let her problems stand in my way and have decided to talk to volunteer services tomorrow. If I don’t get things resolved, then I’ll just look elsewhere. Thanks for listening.

This is completely outrageous!!!What the heck was her point???I've had my shots but have no records I could give anyone.Like Rhonda said, we needed them for school, got thru school case closed.I'm going to be anxious to hear what you find out and I hope someone speaks to that nurse about her rude, stupid comment!

My son started this thing a few years back where if someone annoyed him, said something stupid, whatever he put them on his "list".Now when someone pushes our buttons my sisters and I say they are on the list. That nurse is so on my list!!!!!

I totally agree about her attitude about a person's worth - it would have really ticked me off!!! What difference does it make or business of hers is it if you have children?

I can't donate blood because of vein problems - I'm always turned away from the blood banks. I guess she would have tried to put me on a guilt trip, too.

I hope you are treated better by the other hospital employees, Deb!!! Shame on that nurse!

Well I guess she won't be nominated for Personality of the Year Award! I don't think my mother ever kept records like that and I certainly don't have them. After I sliced my finger open and had to have stitches I had absolutely no idea when my last tetnus shot was. I have enough trouble keeping track of my kids and even then I usually end up calling a doctor's office to get them! And I guess the fact that you have no children and aren't a blood donor makes a difference in the volunteer world or any other world for that matter. I guess she'll have to write me up too for not being able to donate blood! People and their comments just never cease to amaze me.
