It was only a matter of time. Americans seem to sue for anything. We blame fast food chains and cereal companies for excess weight and want money to compensate (maybe the "just say no" slogan should be applied to that), now somebody is suing Atkins claiming after 2-1/2 years on the diet his once clear arteries were almost completely blocked and he needed heart surgery.

When did we become such a nation of whiners pointing fingers and eyeballing big pots of money as compensation for bad decisions we've made or things we don't feel we should put up with? At least this guy isn't suing for mega-millions - he's already a millionaire - hoping instead to recover his costs, and have warning labels on anything bearing the diet's name. It's curious why he didn't stop Atkins after his cholesterol reached dangerous levels. Denial, maybe. Interesting too that it appears Dr. Atkins himself had heart problems, although you have to consider the anti-Atkins source.

I'll stick to moderation theory: Don't overdo anything including overeating. If it goes to extremes, question in depth and be skeptical, even. I've never considered Atkins because of the high fat, and thinking of following it over the long term always seemed outlandish to me.

This is just my opinion, of course, and may be controversial, but I think the seeds of this mentality were sown probably back when welfare was started, then other handout programs came along which went beyond helping the needy and began subsidizing the lazy, government intruded more and more into what should have been private family matters, society began blaming society for all ills and took away personal responsibility, and liberals have jumped on the bandwagon bigtime to get votes from the segment of society. At the rate we're going, we'll be lucky if we're not a socialist nation within the next decade. Think about that when it's time to vote. ;-)
