Hey, what happens when you turn 50?

I've noticed the title of this board is "Fitness for 40 and beyond"........so, does that mean after age 50 you just get "lumped in" with everybody else? I did a Google search yesterday for Women's Fitness After Fifty, and all it came up with was all this "geriatric" stuff! Ugh! Is that what turning 50 means?

I think I overlooked welcoming you to the board in your first post-so hello and welcome. Hope we'll be seeing a lot of you and getting to know you better!
Susan
My first thought was gravity hits bigtime and your waist disappears, but, other than that...
Actually, I was doing pretty well when I first turned 50, but this year (I'll be 55 in Sept. -- I still feel a shock when I think that.), has been a real bummer for me exercise-wise. I think I'm going through some hormonal stuff that a lot of women go through in their 40's, and I'm still trying to adjust to it. Wish I could say I'm handling it well, but so far I'm no role model. Other than yard work and walking, I can't think of any exercise I've done. I was REALLY into Pilates, weight machines, boogie boarding, and even was riding my bike for a while, but haven't been doing any of that. Part of the problem is some damaged disks in my neck, but mostly it's my attitude/lack of energy.
I haven't given up though. I think things will get better, and I hope to do some swimming, which I love, when I go downstate in a week or so to stay at a resort with some relatives.
Several board members in their 50's are doing quite well, so you may be like them.

Hello, Meg, and welcome to the board! Sorry I didn't get to say "hi" sooner...very busy last few days.
I am going to be 55 this month and I am still very active. I feel you can continue to do what you are used to as long as it doesn't hurt your joints or health. You may have to tone it down a notch by avoiding high impact, but everything is just about doable. I even taught a Kick boxing class last week. My kicks may have gotten a little lower and I didn't all the jumping jacks, but I did do it. And...it felt good! You might think of doing more pilates and yoga to keep stretching the body and weight training is more important than ever to prevent osteoporosis.
I have taught Silver Sneakers classes in the past...mostly done in a chair. It is certainly not for me, but it is nice to know the option is there
