I've noticed the title of this board is "Fitness for 40 and beyond"........so, does that mean after age 50 you just get "lumped in" with everybody else? I did a Google search yesterday for Women's Fitness After Fifty, and all it came up with was all this "geriatric" stuff! Ugh! Is that what turning 50 means?

Turning 50 certainly shouldn't mean chair exercises! You can be as fit and healthy at any age. And I've certainly met up with any number of men and women over 50 that could probably run circles around youngen's half their age! We have a number of women on this board over 50- myself included. I will be 51 in a few weeks.

I think I overlooked welcoming you to the board in your first post-so hello and welcome. Hope we'll be seeing a lot of you and getting to know you better!

My first thought was gravity hits bigtime and your waist disappears, but, other than that...

Actually, I was doing pretty well when I first turned 50, but this year (I'll be 55 in Sept. -- I still feel a shock when I think that.), has been a real bummer for me exercise-wise. I think I'm going through some hormonal stuff that a lot of women go through in their 40's, and I'm still trying to adjust to it. Wish I could say I'm handling it well, but so far I'm no role model. Other than yard work and walking, I can't think of any exercise I've done. I was REALLY into Pilates, weight machines, boogie boarding, and even was riding my bike for a while, but haven't been doing any of that. Part of the problem is some damaged disks in my neck, but mostly it's my attitude/lack of energy.

I haven't given up though. I think things will get better, and I hope to do some swimming, which I love, when I go downstate in a week or so to stay at a resort with some relatives.

Several board members in their 50's are doing quite well, so you may be like them.

I did not have the chance to welcome you either, so welcome to a great group of ladies. We are a mixed bunch and spread all over. I mean the country not our b*tts.....lol! We even have a great lady over in Italy too! Some of us are pushing that only 39 bit, not mentioning any names. Some are mid 40, there myself (I am 43). Some into their 50's as you have already met Susan and Rhonda. I guess my look into what happens when you turn 50, my hopes would be that I am a wiser, more beautiful, healthier woman then I was at 30. You sound like you are doing some great exercise and you have a great attitude. So welcome to the group, we look forward to hearing more from you.

Hello, Meg, and welcome to the board! Sorry I didn't get to say "hi" sooner...very busy last few days.

I am going to be 55 this month and I am still very active. I feel you can continue to do what you are used to as long as it doesn't hurt your joints or health. You may have to tone it down a notch by avoiding high impact, but everything is just about doable. I even taught a Kick boxing class last week. My kicks may have gotten a little lower and I didn't all the jumping jacks, but I did do it. And...it felt good! You might think of doing more pilates and yoga to keep stretching the body and weight training is more important than ever to prevent osteoporosis.

I have taught Silver Sneakers classes in the past...mostly done in a chair. It is certainly not for me, but it is nice to know the option is there

There is a great video that just came out called, "Keeping Fit in Your 50's." It certainly is more challenging than chair exercises! It has 3 videos and includes pilates and yoga along with strength training and aerobics. Its on www.amazon.com
