join in the discussions and learn how to beat the "40's metabolism slow down" curse. I'm 48 and finding it so hard to lose and tone the 20 pounds that are sticking to me like glue. I have been trying for a year to lose weight to no avail. I have joined the community challenge - walk it off, lots of energy, no weight loss. any suggestions and ideas are most welcome.
thanks,
Dale

Welcome, Dale! This is a great board. We all know the answer is to eat right, exercise regularly, and take good care of ourselves in general, but the hard part is doing it. What used to not be necessary

Yes, it's hard to lose when the metabolism starts slowing. I've been wanting to lose a mere 5 pounds and it's not happening, despite my exercise. I'm healthier than I've ever been in my life, my clothes all fit... and I can enjoy a bit extra, so I'm starting to rethink if my goal is realistic. I'm never going to be in my mid-20s again, and hanging on to a goal that I had 10-15 years ago might not be appropriate for me anymore. Sometimes shaking things up in your routines will help. My routine in the last 1-1/2 years is drastically different from my successful months in 1998 before I got pregnant, I could tell I needed something different this time around. More weights (free weights, 5-8-10 pounds), more intense cardio, and a bit more variety - not the same routine day in and day out. Shaking things up could also work with meals and snacks. After all, our intake and weight gain starts with what we put in our mouths! I'm going to the grocery store a bit later today and will be stocking up on fruits now that more are in season. I think peaches or strawberries, with a little cottage cheese on the side, would make a much better and more satisfying snack than a scrawny granola bar or my DD's Scooby Doo Fruit Snacks, LOL!
What works for one person may not be the solution for someone else, but that's why there are so many different ideas out there... and most of them get discussed here! Stick with it, and hope to see you around here often.

Hi, Dale, and welcome to the board. I am a new member also and have some of the same concerns as you do. I am 49, and also am having trouble losing even 10 lbs! I don't consider myself "overweight," but I sure don't look like I used to even 6 years ago. I eat pretty well; the component I have to get used to adding in is exercise. I never did it before, and have just started on a "plan".
Hope to see you around here.

Two words....patience and perseverance. It's a slow process to get it off at our age, but it can be done. It takes patience because it comes off much more slowly, and it takes perseverance because sometimes it's so tempting to throw in the towel. The best solution is developing a plan that works for you. A combination of fitness and healthy eating habits. Many of us have found that cutting most of the processed carbs, (white flour, white rice, white pasta, sugar) have been very beneficial to seeing the scale move down.
As you probably already know, we have a few fitness instructors and a personal trainer sprinkled into our midst and they are a wealth of information. There is also a lot of knowledge available from all of the other wonderful women on this board. Hope you hang around here and post with us.

Hello, Dale...welcome to the community! WE do understand what you are saying about the metabolism slowdown, but you are on the right road to help get it going again.
I am sure the ladies here will give you lots of tips on what to do to get/stay fit and healthy. Exercise is the best answer as well as healthy food choices. It may not happen overnight, but it will happen.
