Keep my Dad in your prayers & thoughts

I talked to my dad on Monday after getting back from MIL's. Chatted for a long while. Among other things, I asked him how he was doing on his walking. He hemmed and hawed, lowered his voice saying "Mom didn't want me to worry you with this, but something showed up at my annual check-up." Apparently, his doctor detected something with his heart, and further tests revealed Dad has had a heart attack in the last year. What's bizarre is that Dad had none of the classic symptoms, having what's termed a "silent" heart attack. It could've happened in his sleep, could've happened with some other symptoms that could've easily been mistaken for something else, or could've had no symptoms at all. Obviously, they want to know all they can about what happened, but neither Mom nor Dad are in a panic about it (nor am I - what's to panic over something that's already happened?). He goes for two stress tests on June 29th, and then on July 6th, he'll go for his in-depth consultation. Until the doc finishes with the tests and figures out what, if anything, can be done, Dad's been told not to continue with his walking - he was up to 4.2 miles per day.

I told Dad that I'm glad he *did* tell me. After all, I'm directly related, I have arrhythmia myself, and the knowledge of any family history of cardiovascular disease could assist me as I get older... as it would Allison. Dan's parents often didn't tell their kids (Dan's the youngest at 47) that something was up, and I've talked to a few more friends who's parents also kept family "health secrets" so as not to worry their kids. I don't get that logic - having an illness doesn't mean adult children are going to automatically put an aging parent in a nursing home.

So if you would, keep ol' George in your prayers and that salients facts don't escape the doctor's sight.

"Ol' George" is in my prayers, Linda. In light of what the prelim tests have shown, I'm concerned about the doctor telling him to stop his walking altogether. I do hope there are no further indications of problems.

My ILs are of the same mind as your's are. They didn't tell us that my FIL was in the hospital for a couple of procedures and incidents until after he was home. I don't understand that mindset, either. It's nice they want to save us the worry, but we need to - and ought to - know. How we process the information and our reaction is our problem.

Of course, Linda. Prayers and good thoughts are on the way.

It is a good thing it was found out now and not if another heart attack happened. I guess he is still symptom free to be able to do what he likes and walk that much daily. Thank goodness for annual check ups.

Looks like he had an early warning system going!

I'll include your dad in my prayers and hope they're able to find out what caused the previous heart attack to be able to prevent future ones.

I agree about wanting to know what's going on with my family's health. I would rather be prepared and try to help in any way I can than be blindsided by a serious health issue.

Keep us posted.
