Keep my Dad in your prayers & thoughts

I talked to my dad on Monday after getting back from MIL's. Chatted for a long while. Among other things, I asked him how he was doing on his walking. He hemmed and hawed, lowered his voice saying "Mom didn't want me to worry you with this, but something showed up at my annual check-up." Apparently, his doctor detected something with his heart, and further tests revealed Dad has had a heart attack in the last year. What's bizarre is that Dad had none of the classic symptoms, having what's termed a "silent" heart attack. It could've happened in his sleep, could've happened with some other symptoms that could've easily been mistaken for something else, or could've had no symptoms at all. Obviously, they want to know all they can about what happened, but neither Mom nor Dad are in a panic about it (nor am I - what's to panic over something that's already happened?). He goes for two stress tests on June 29th, and then on July 6th, he'll go for his in-depth consultation. Until the doc finishes with the tests and figures out what, if anything, can be done, Dad's been told not to continue with his walking - he was up to 4.2 miles per day.

I told Dad that I'm glad he *did* tell me. After all, I'm directly related, I have arrhythmia myself, and the knowledge of any family history of cardiovascular disease could assist me as I get older... as it would Allison. Dan's parents often didn't tell their kids (Dan's the youngest at 47) that something was up, and I've talked to a few more friends who's parents also kept family "health secrets" so as not to worry their kids. I don't get that logic - having an illness doesn't mean adult children are going to automatically put an aging parent in a nursing home.

So if you would, keep ol' George in your prayers and that salients facts don't escape the doctor's sight.

Linda, I'll keep your dad in my prayers. Good thing he told you about this. I agree that it's important to know the health history of your family.
