Nancy, I'm so sorry to hear about the damage Annie did. It is so weird what dogs decide to use for chew toys. Back when we had our 150 lb. 1/2 Great Dane/1/2 Rottweiller, Buck decided to pull the electrical switch
Good solution! A few years back one of our neighbors' cats decided to use the cedar mulch outside our living room windows as his/her personal litter box. There are some aromas that cedar mulch can't even overcome and we open those windows on muggy summer nights, so it was pretty unpleasant. I mixed a lot of red pepper flakes in the mulch for several days until the aroma stopped a while. I won that contest.
I bet the novelty of the lights glowing at night roused her curiosity. Are you sure she's not part feline?
Sorry to hear that Annie was so naughty. I hope she hasn't been talking to Otto! Otto was never a chewer although we adopted him post puppy stage. But as you know he does have ways of getting into trouble. In fact there was another garbage "mishap" this afternoon. Fortunately it wasn't me that encountered the disaster but rather oldest DD. Maybe I should try adding a little hot sauce to the lid of the garbage. Someone had suggested adding a little white vinegar to the can. Heck I would try soaking the whole bag in white vinegar if it would keep him out! Hope the hot sauce wises her up to no more chewing!
Sometimes I put a little nail polish remover on a cotton ball in the bathroom trash can to keep Winston from dining. The smell seems to be enough to repel him. I just have to remember to keep doing it or not put anything in there that's too tempting, which can be some of the grossest stuff!

You did well not to totally lose it, and I'm sorry to hear she did so much damage. Cats can be just as destructive, and as much joy as I know a pet can add to a household... it's stories like this that dampen my enthusiasm for owning something with 4 legs and teeth. What am I saying? Even my parents' bird can be destructive, and it has 2 legs and a beak!

I hope Annie has learned her painful lesson.
