Hi, I hope I'm doing this right. I haven't posted on an Ivillage board in 3 years and this is really different.
I read your message and thought I needed to write you. I know what it's like to eat when you are down, I'm a prime example. Money problems are so hard. You are a mother like myself and we go without all the time. When my husband was unemployed we got HBO for 6 months free. Our local libraries here in NY have video and DVD rentals so when we didn't have movie channels we went to the library. Keep your chin up my friend. I'll keep you in my prayers. God bless! AMC
So sorry to read your post of the difficulties you are having. Will keep you in my thoughts.I want to congratulate you for managing to eat well. I know for myself when I'm upset that is hard to do.Take care.
Mary hang in there. Just look at how well you have done over the last few weeks. You do not want set yourself in backwards mode. Being depressed, upset, fustrated, angry are all normal feelings and you just like the rest of us are completely entitled. Many of us feel the cruch with money from time to time. We understand what you are feeling. Heck I dropped HBO, from my cable bill, I dropped my husbands cell phone 2 months ago, in order to scale down some more. My job is only part time and I have been trying to cut my grocery bill too. Do yourself a favor and take a walk at night, go to the library like someone mentioned. They rent the movies for free. Hang in there, you can do this!!
Mary, hang in there! Money troubles can make you feel like the world is caving in on you. Please don't let it. You've done wonderful work putting your mind to getting healthy, and the results are starting to show. Let the extras go, concentrate on staying in your healthy mindset. Look for freebie fun. Visit the library for tapes and CDs. Get on the wait lists for the books you want to read instead of buying them. Are there free concerts nearby that you can attend? How about free theater-in-the-park performances? How about a leisurely stroll where you look at what's around you through different eyes - read Cussette's e-mail from Sunday morning; it might help you.
Please don't give up, Mary! The money woes will pass and you won't be any worse for them. Look at them as another challenge to conquer, like you've started to do with your weight. You say that looked like an insurmountable problem, but here you are, doing it! You've got the power! Use it to the best!
I can understand how difficult a time this must be for you. Please don't let this difficult time undo all the good that you've doing for yourself. We all have those times where we feel food will fill the void and heartache that we're going through. You've been doing such good things for yourself-keep those thoughts in the forefront of your mind. Like the others have said use your local library for newspapers, CD's, movies, books, etc. You can do this and know that we're all here to support you! You can DO this!
I'm really sorry to hear what you're going through now and can empathize. My husband's company is growing wonderfully, but the more it grows the more it takes investment capital to keep it going until we reach a certain point and then it will flow back. Until then, we've had to tighten our belts a lot from what we were used to. I'm trying to approach it as a "character building" experience even though I think we've had enough of those to last for quite a while.
If you can find a hobby that doesn't cost anything it can really help. I used to spend a lot of time at the malls. Now, I spend time walking the beach looking for shark teeth. In many ways, it's just as satisfying, and it's a lot healthier and cheaper. Do you like to garden? It's healthy and has the benefit of giving you something beautiful for your efforts. Sometimes walking in the neighborhood can be nice before dusk when lots of people are out. I find that I see more neighbors to chat with then than at any other time. Volunteer work is good if you have time. I know it doesn't pay, but the emotional reward is wonderful and sometimes the connections can lead to bigger and better things. It gave me
...There's some good in this world, Mr. Frodo, and it's worth fighting for...
Lady Irish remember in The Lord of the Rings they never gave up so don't you. I was looking back over some of the post and noticed one you recently did about your weight being less than it has been in 10 years. That is a great accomplishment. I also found one where you were going to clean up and discard some socks and then watch the entire Lord of the Rings triology. I bet that was a fun day, I love those movies also.
I wanted to remind you to focus on the positives, even though sometimes they may seem small. I was just talking to some co-workers today about when I was a small child we lived in a house that had an out-house and no running water. We took a bath in the creek, a wash tub, or went to my grandma's. I also remember the days when I was happy with a 13" black & white TV that only got 2 or 3 channels. When I got divorced the 1st time I had 3 young children and no car. I had to walk to work and most of the money I made went for rent and a babysitter. When I finally did get on my feet I was very appreciative to have a car to drive. So see you really have a lot more to be grateful for than you probably think you do. I have all the necessities of life plus some luxaries now but I still remember what it is like to do without.
My personal experience has been whenever I have gone through some hard times, financially or emotionally, it has made me a stronger better person in the end. You have made some great accomplishments, don't give up yet. Remember "Don't give up one minute before the miracle." There's a rainbow at the end of the storm. Have faith & trust in God, He will help you through anything. I know, I've been through a lot and continue to have things come up which without His help I could never have made it.
I appoligize this post was so long. I just know what it is like to be hurting inside. You have a lot of people here that truly care about you. Try going outside if just for a little while each day. Sunshine & fresh air can work miracles sometimes and volunteer work can keep you really busy. When the kids were in elementary school I would help the kindegarden & 1st grade classes by volunteering to do one on one reading with a student. The reward to see a young child smile is priceless.
