Yup! I'm amazed at what they're able to achieve using their bodies. I also realize the physical toll their training takes on them (look at Gail Devers at age 37), and that running 100m in 10 seconds, or diving 10m and not making a splash, or hurtling through the air above a gymnastic mat isn't my job. I watch them in awe, and to inspire me to believe I can do more.
All that said, didn't you want to run out and leap on a trampoline after watching that competition???
I'll watch you and Lori. I hurt my back on a trampoline in 7th grade, and other than the little ones, I'm not jumper any more. Even then I have to be careful, if you know what I mean. I do enjoy watching other people though.

On one of our recent Costco outings, my DH found a DVD of Olympic event highlights from the early modern games up to year 2000. I'm going to watch some of those videos and see how the physiques have changed over the years. I've gotta think that the athletes from years ago weren't necessarily teeny-tiny whispy creatures or as muscled as they are today.
I reeaally hated the feeling of being thrown off a springboard (never went off a platform), and was deathly afraid of diving straight down into a pool despite it being 10 or 12 feet deep and knowing what I was supposed to do. I went to the Y for swimming and diving classes for I don't know how many years. I must have finally gone off the board at least once to pass the class I was in. Never took another diving class, but finally learned to swim like a shark.
I didn't get to see the runners but the women I have seen have really stuck in my mind.Incredibly lean and no fat to be found.I thought about those bodies as I was running today.I had to crack up at what your DH says about runners.Several of friends and family members think I'm crazy because I run.Or at least I think that's why they think I'm crazy....
Yeah, I've noticed, and noticed their legs, too. It's inspiring, but only to a point - most of 'em are also 18-20 years younger than me and the sport occupies their spare time. It has given me much more of an appreciation for athletic physiques on women, and that "skinny" surely is not equal to "healthy". I like seeing the muscles on those women.
BTW, one of the few events I've turned off from sheer boredom is beach volleyball. No doubt the contestants train hard like others... but if it weren't for the bathing suits, would it even be televised? Serve, set up, spike, miss; serve, set up, spike, miss; repeat at least 60 times per game but usually way more; beat other team twice in 3 matches; occupy air time so that viewers don't get to watch other events. I definitely prefer the 6-person team court competition indoors. Yesterday beach volleyball was on 2 channels at once. Great thing to doze through, except that I didn't want to doze. Argh!

Keep in mind many of those girls are teenagers, some as young as 16. I'd venture to say that a lot of us were lean with little body fat at 16 too. Of course, not to the extreme of an Olympic athlete, but certainly a lot moreso than most teenagers today and most definitely more than at perimenopause!

That trampoline still looks like fun....
