Hi everybody, since I am new to trying to get back into shape I could use some advice on getting started on a weight routine. I have started walking again and want to tone up my upper body a bit. I tend to bulk up if I do heavy weights and I am too out of shape to right now anyway: )

Maureen/Mo

If this was a real life it would have come with instructions.

If you like using DVD's Tamilee Webb has some good ones including one "I Want Those Arms". They are 2 15 minute segments and you can use any size weight starting out and just increase the weight as you feel the weights becoming too easy. She also has an excellent stretching video called "Beginners Stretch for Flexibility".

www.collagevideo.com

has a huge selection and you can preview them on your computer to see if it's something that interests you and also has reviews from people who have purchased and used them.

Hi Mo! No real advice except that light weight work has done fine by me. I use The Firm series (specifically 2 of the 3 tapes, both using weights). I started off with 3# weights, then added 5# weights for my "heavy" weights. Currently I'm using #5 (as my light) & 8# (as my heavy) weights, occasionally venturing to 10# on certain exercises. What I use as a guide is my own body: when the lighter weights no longer challenge me, I move up. Even when I was doing weights 3x a week, moving up took time, because 2 extra pounds per arm (or leg if you're using weights during lunges and squats) make a heckuva difference. I realize those weights are considered wimpy by some, but I've got noticable tone in my arms, and can do 20 push ups from my toes these days. Even the wimpiest of weights can get you started.
