Need advice! :)

Happy Friday everyone!

I've been recently told that I have high blood pressure from my family doc. He's put me on a pretty strict diet (no more biscuits/gravy with applewood bacon!) and told me that I need to start working out on a regular basis. I've decided to start looking into some of the health clubs in my area, but since I've never stepped inside a gym in my life, I don't know where to start.

What should I be looking for in a club? How different is it to join a "ladies only" club? What kinds of activities are the most fun (like yoga etc.)?

Any advice is greatly appreciated!!!

Hi Karen,

A good place to start working out would be Curves. I'm not sure if you have one in your area but it's women only and from what I understand, it's a great place to begin. Maybe someone here knows more about them. Then, after you've been going to Curves and you become more familiar with using different types of equipment, excersizes... go to a full gym.

Good luck!

Hi Karen and welcome to FOF! Sorry to hear about your high blood pressure but I do believe with diet and exercise it can be managed more easily. You asked about gyms and I must be honest you will ask 100 people and probley get 100 different answers. My input......depends on you and your personality. I do think that gyms that have both men and women can be slightly overwhelming. I am not really an outgoing person, I have a tendency to step back and watch and well our local gym scared the you know what out of me. I did relax after a while and I got to know some of the people at the front desk as well as some of the personal trainers and I did relax. I see someone mentioned Curves. I did that too and it was a great way to start. Their program is pretty basic and easy to follow and there is always someone nearby to lend a hand if you have concerns or questions. It is definately woman friendly and more relaxed. However, you get out what you put in. I found the exercises were not enough of a challenge which lead me to the full gym. I would visit several different gyms in your area and let them know you are shoping around. Talk to the owners and the trainer and the people using the place. Ask for a 1 week trial.......after 3 or 4 different places you should have a better understanding of what you want and are looking for. We look forward to getting to know you so stick around.

Hi and welcome to the board.

It depends on who you ask about the gym.

As for gyms---I've never enjoyed them.
