I need a boost ladies!

Hi all,
I'm new to the site and to the whole message board thing. I'd love some support and am eager to reciprocate. In a nutshell, I've gained back 15 of the 25 pounds I lost. My job ended in late 2005 and all the boredom and time alone turns me to eating. I used to be so disciplined: 1200 calories a day, kept food journals, exercised religiously. Now I start a diet every Sunday, fail by Tuesday, and the gym time is far less frequent.
I have a wonderful boyfriend who is totally supportive and tells me all the time how good I look but unless you're happy with yourself, you just don't see it when you look in the mirror. It's SO much harder once you hit 40.
Any tips on getting some traction so I can really start and not fail immediately every time?

Welcome to the board! We're happy to give you support and motivation and would love to get to know you better. What kind of exercise/workouts do you enjoy doing?

Hi there!
I really, really enjoy hiking and horseback riding as physical pursuits outside, but unfortunately, city living limits them to vacation activities only. So I ride my bike outside in the summer but mainly hit the gym to spin and lift 4-5 times a week. Although my workouts have definitely slowed from their peak a year ago, I still do a fair amount of cardio, usually every day to every other day. It's the food that's just killing me! I sit in front of the the t.v. and eat like a dog who doesn't know when he's full--it's tragic!
I feel like I've tried every motivational tool imaginable, food journals, post-it notes on my mirror, new music on the IPod...nothing sticks. I'm terrified that the 15 I've gained back is just a precursor to the remaining 10--they say most people gain back what they lost and then some within 5 years and I'm just about approaching that milestone.
boo hoo.

I'm a Nancy too! 45 yrs old, single, no kids, living in Chicago and enrolled in (get this) pastry school! I was laid off from a completely unfulfilling 20 yr. finance career in late 2005 and fortunately, I had the flexibility to change careers and start over. I love to bake and up until a year ago, I had the discipline to make the stuff but not eat it. I know I eat when I'm bored; I know I eat when I'm not hungry. And I'm always remorseful afterwards.
If I'm going to make a go of this new career, I really need to get my own diet and eating habits back on track or I'm toast!

Hi Nancy and welcome to FOF, great board with lots of ladies who can offer support, idea's or an occasional kick in the pants. We have a variety of exercise doers and dieters. Please jump right in and get to know us. I can tell you a little about myself. I am 46 and a mom of three. I stayed home with my kids for 19 years and about 4 years ago I returned to school and took a job as a legal secretary. Before that I was a SAHM, babysat for 2 little girls (beside my own 3 kids) and I had a custom cake business that I ran out of my home. I know what you mean about eating those wonderful treats...........enough said. Well welcome and we look forward to getting to know you better. It does sound like you have the exercise part down now you need to work on your food. Do you drink water? How much? Can you replace your snacks with low calorie ones......like fresh veggies or fruit? Have you considered joining a group like Weight Watchers? I happen to love the program and I find it easy and do-able, that is when I want to, lol. Well welcome again!

Hi Deb,
I've thought about WW--always heard that's the best one. Is there a range of weight loss needs?? I'm on the lower side and don't want to walk into a meeting and be chased out because I'm not apparantly overweight. My thing is that I need to address the root cause of my binge eating--I'm eating for reasons that have nothing to do with hunger. It hasn't totally caught up to me yet but it will if I keep going. I was so confident 10 lbs. ago and now I'm heading down a slippery slope.

just knowing I have company helps. Today's a new day! I was on my elliptical at 4 :15 a.m. so my cardio is logged for the day. I have my whole grain cereal, fruit and soy milk packed in my backpack to take to school--wish me luck! my goal is to have it off by mid-July when my sisters come to visit me.

Hi Nancy and welcome to the board! Glad to have you here with us and it is the place for support, motivation and encouragement.

I hit the 40 mark with a move from a city environment where I was doing a lot of walking and running around after kids with 3 of my own and babysitting for several others. Then a move to the burbs, a return to the workforce with a desk job, an office with so many snacks and so it began! Going from a person who could pretty much eat anything and everything and never worry about the scale that sure did change. I think it's important to make small changes, not to try to change everything at once and most importantly not to beat yourself for a bad day!
