Hmmmmm. What can I tell y'all that's going to make me sound a lot more interesting than I really am???? I live just outside of Houston, and have lived in this area all 42 years. If you're not familiar with this area, just imagine Urban Cowboy. I just started looking at the boards about a week ago. I'd tried several months ago, but being as computers and I don't get along too well, I gave up. Married, almost 20 years Aug. 1, 1987 son 15 years daughter 13 years (yes, she comes complete with an attitude), but I love her anyway. lol 2 cats, 3 years old brother and sister, Mr. Kitty and Squirt
I've never been pro-exercise. I mean, I could stock a gym with the equipment I've bought, but it all looks better on tv. I've been a member of health clubs and the YMCA off and on for many years. I just don't stick with it, but I really should.
I'm not working now. I'd been teaching 6th and 7th grade, but I needed a break. I really miss some of the kids, but I see them at sporting events since my daughter's in 7th grade at another school in the same district. Some of them, well, I run and hide if I see them.
I've recently decided to stop eating meat. Long story. Growing up eating fried chicken and fried everything, it's been difficult.
I used to be active in my church, but became very discouraged. Now I've been visiting a couple of churches in Houston that are several miles away, but it's worth it.
Welcome! You sound plenty interesting. We do know each other well from all the posts we've done over the years (discussing things we sometimes wouldn't even tell family or close local friends) and from some of the get-togethers we've had. We're sort of trying to arrange another one. The first one a few years ago was to Asheville, NC. The last one was to Washington, DC, last April to see the cherry blossoms and sights.
Several members have children close to the ages of your children, so there will be some common ground there.
I'm really bad about having bought a ton of exercise equipment and used it little or none before getting rid of it.
We do all kinds of workouts here -- jogging, Jazzercise, weights, yoga, Pilates, Zumba, walking, swimming, bicycling, video tapes at home, etc., so you're bound to come across someone with an interest similar to yours.
We've also done or are doing Weight Watchers, South Beach, Fat Flush, low fat, low calorie, and assorted other ways of eating. I'm considering getting back on WW, and several members already have. It just strikes me as the most balanced and healthiest way to eat long term. I think they have quite a few vegetarian recipes.
My current exercise passion is Zumba through our YMCA. If you like to dance, you'll love it. It's gotten huge here in FL. The creator lives in Miami, but is originally from Columbia. Apparently, it's big in TX too, because I just typed in Houston in their instructor search and came up with a long list. If you're a member of the Y, it's free there. Instructors vary, so if you decide to try it and don't think the instructor is great, try another. I was fortunate to get the best one in town in my first classes.
What is zumba? It sounds like you're saying it's a type of dance. Is that correct? As far a San Antonio, the main attractions are the Alamo and River Walk. If you know anyone that's been to the River Walk they'll probably say the same thing I'm going to. It's prettier at night when it's all lit up. Sometimes it's over-rated. One nice thing is the boat rides down the river walk area. There's some that serve dinner. The part of the river encompassed by restaurants, bars, and hotels is probably about half of a mile. I might be off, but it's a nice walk. We spent our 17th or 18 anniversary at a hotel on the rw. Isn't that terrible that I can't remember which one. I do, however know how long I've been married.lol
I almost forgot. There's a place in SA, but I don't remember the name. Maybe something like Horizon Park. It's where the World's Fair was held many years ago. It's something that would kill a little time. There's also a big Mexican market with all kinds of shopping available; clothes, toys, purses, food, leather goods(I came upon PETA's website by mistake, and couldn't help myself but to watch their videos. I'll never intentionally buy leather again after seeing the animals literally skinned alive. I mean, one poor dog blinked and had blood on his eyelashes, his body was white since all the fur was off. It was the most awful thing I've ever saw. Sorry, but thinking of the shopping place made me think about it. I haven't got that out of my mind for a couple of weeks.) jewelry, sombraros, and pretty much anything that might look like something from Mexico. San Antonio would be a place that could keep you busy for 2 or 3 days. There's also a Wax Museum and a Ripley's Believe it or Not place close to the Alamo. If you come to San Antonio, you need to plan to visit a few towns around. If it becomes probable, I'll fill you in. There's a river in New Braunsfels that's popular for floating down. Our capital, Austin is a beautiful town (at least the outskirts of town are), 2 big outlet malls in San Marcos. All these places are about an hour apart.
One more thing. What kind of fat flush have y'all done? I've read about them, but haven't done one. There's an enormous amount of information to sort through. Sorry, I know you're probably bored to tears. Have a nice evening/night. Pam
Zumba is a form of cardio that combines Latin dances (salsa, merengue, kumbia), hip hop, and belly dance, not to mention a little good ole' western side steps in the "Save a Horse, Ride a Cowboy" number (so fun!). The web site will be able to show you better what it's about. www.zumba.com. Almost all the gear for sale was gone, but I noticed today a bunch more is available again. I'm getting the CD of some of the best songs and some more of the fitted T's. It's the most fun I've ever had exercising, and boy, do you work up a sweat! We have people from 7 to in their 70's in the various classes. Those of us who were timid about "shakin what our mama's gave us" have gotten over it. It is a riot! I like that I'm feeling less inhibited.
Thanks for the info on San Antonio. We have a couple of other board members who live in Texas too, so you're not alone.
I am a real animal lover and started bringing strays home at the age of 6. I hate to think of what is done to animals in this country and around the world. I'm not a big meat eater just because I'm not that crazy about it, but I do eat mostly chicken and seafood when I do.
The Fat Flush Diet I did is actually called that and is by Ann Louise Gittleman. She has a book out by that name, writes columns for various magazines, and even has a Fat Flush Board here on iVillage. I used to post on that several years ago. I think it's a good thing to do periodically just to clean your system out. I can adjust to some of the things in it for a while, but it's not something I could do for an extended period. http://messageboards.ivillage.com/iv-fbfatflush
I can't wait for you to take a class and hear what you think of it. I started to order the DVD's, but I think there are 2 really basic ones I wouldn't use much in the 4-piece set. If I could have ordered them separately, I would probably have ordered the 2 more advanced ones. Still, I think doing it in the group setting, with the sort of party atmosphere that gets going, is part of its appeal. I should get the music CD from our instructor tonight. She's making a run to get some Zumba gear and will be gone for tomorrow AM's class. :-(
I forgot a couple of things in the SA area. 6 Flags Fiesta Texas is in San Antonio. The Schliterbaun(sp?) is in New Braunfels. It's a water park; a lot of fun things for kids of all ages and adults love it to.

Looks like that gal that teaches Zumba in Tacoma (YMCA) will be moving to Gig Harbor and teaching classes here.
