I'm just wondering if any of the rest of you have noticed the effect of good, healthy, food on your body versis the empty calorie, sugar laden "stuff" we consume?

Food is such a struggle for me. Yesterday at 6am I ate 2 packs of instant oatmeal w/skim meal and a HUGE helping of peanut butter.

Just thought I would add my 2 cents worth here. Just reading your posts make me agree with what everyone said. I do believe by depriving ourselves we set our selves up for a train wreck. Weight Watchers preaches everything or anything you like but in moderation. You need or want chocolate have it, like Margie said two hershey kisses slowly melted in your mouth should do the trick. Drink lots of water and move on. Much easier to write and say then actually do but worth trying. I figure if I can stick with it 98% of the time I am 98% better for it. Do I feel like cr*p after a binge, sure do but we need to remind ourselves that we are not perfect and we are always going to slip up. A while ago I posted in one of my whining sessions how I fear looking like my grandmother.........I know if I just say the h*ll with it that is what will happen and I so do not want to go there. So raise you glass of lemon water with a hint of mint to fresh starts, fresh friends, fresh begining and fresh tomorrows!!!

1. What do you think makes us crave the unhealthy sugars and fats like we do?
Why is it so hard in the first place just to eat right, to eat healthy foods, etc.? There are foods good for us that taste good, but, the stuff that is bad for you tastes sooo goooood. Also I want to blame all the rest - chemical, emotional, hormonal. Our metabolism is a killer too as we get older. Trying not to eat chocolate or fatty foods probably makes it even harder since it is something I seem to want even more or think about more when I know I shouldn't have it. I was being careful and still having a little bit of chocolate or something I really like here or there but all of a sudden I just had to have some gooey chocolatey stuff. Now I can't seem to control myself. This is where it's really hard to get back on track. I made sure I didn't have any chocolate at work and when I was at home I took "just a little piece." I don't know why I had to do that.

2. What do you do when you are craving and craving? Do you cave in and do a free for all day like I did? Yes, as I mentioned above.
Do you give yourself permission to do that? Or do you pick a bit each day so the damage is not so overwhelming? Do you give yourself permission to have one snack each day?
I don't usually say okay have a chocolate or some sweet thing every day. I'll just do it maybe once a week and try to make it something that I haven't had in a while.
Does that keep the massive craving at bay? Or are you the typer of personality that is better off eating none than just a little bit? How do you cope and make it work?
I think stress has a bit to do with it too and exercising at night helps but during the day I need it and that's when there's no time to exercise.

3. What do you do the next day to get your energy level back? Both physical energy and mental energy?
I do like how I feel after exercising - as long as I don't get too tired - like the energized feeling. Also drinking water is good. Reading all the posts with those good sayings helps too. Don't give up - you can still get on track the same day and keep on going. Just start thinking of things that will help you and start typing them - you start thinking of other things then too! Sometimes it makes you feel better just knowing there are things you can do and You can do it!! It always helps to have others helping you out too.
I know I really need to start writing down the healthy things I like so I can go to the store and get them.

1. What do you think makes us crave the unhealthy sugars and fats like we do? Is it chemical? Is it emotional? And, why do we cave in when we know that our bodies will feel badly the next day? Or is it just me? I don't know about the chemical part-although I do find it interesting how some people have such a sweet tooth and other people can have little or no interest in sweets. Emotions definitely play a part in eating the bad things and yes I always feel terrible the next day.

2. What do you do when you are craving and craving? Do you cave in and do a free for all day like I did? Do you give yourself permission to do that? Or do you pick a bit each day so the damage is not so overwhelming? Do you give yourself permission to have one snack each day? Does that keep the massive craving at bay? Or are you the typer of personality that is better off eating none than just a little bit? How do you cope and make it work?

When I'm craving and craving I usually have the thing I'm craving but try not to overdo it. Sometimes just the taste of the craving will make it go away. I try not to have the free for all days-they happen but I try not to give myself permission. There are certain times where I have to have a little bit of sweetness each day. I try to find things that aren't so damaging to give me that satisfaction of something sweet. Pudding cups sometimes will do the trick or sometimes just letting a piece of dark chocolate melt away. I find I do much better with keeping on track of healthy eating when I eat every couple of hours. That means 3 meals and at least two snacks a day. The none or a little bit is a tricky thing with me. Sometimes just a taste of something will work and there other times that just that little bit will send me searching for more. I just really try to keep the things that really do me in out of the house. I have to say sometimes when I'm really telling myself it's ok to have something I'll take one look at the calorie and fat grams and decide that maybe it's really not worth it! Fruit (especially the summer fruits) or one of the light fruits yogarts also will take the edge off that sweet tooth a lot of the time. It doesn't always have to be something not so healthy to take the edge off sometimes it just needs to be sweet tasting. I also chew sugar free gum. Sometimes I just need to have something in my mouth and that takes the urge away to go find something to eat.

3. What do you do the next day to get your energy level back? Both physical energy and mental energy? I definitely get back to exercising which always makes me feel better mentally and physically. When I exercise on a regular basis it usually helps me to focus keeping on track.

Great questions Nancy and things that I often wonder how everyone else deals with it.

Deb, you are so right about food and exercise. I get so much physical activity but still can't eat like I could in my 30s. So unfair!! If I ate like more of the women on this board I'd slide into every outfit I have!!!!

My twin sister absolutely loves food. She wants every detail of what everyone eats when they

I think my blunt aunt used the word..you are obsessive! I am.

I was telling Eric today on the phone after my very long workout that I was looking at my rear end and saying how sad I was that it wasn't better looking.

I then told him mark my words in 30 years I'll probably LONG for the body I have now.
