Dad is in a rehab hospital. Yesterday, he made a major breakthrough since his awful fall. He was taken to the bathroom using his walker. When he was finished, instead of buzzing for an aide (as he should have), he got up by himself and used the walker to come back by himself to where Mom was sitting!!! Needless to say, she was very excited, as we all are! He is just amazing. He still has a long way to go though.
I believe Mom may be on the same med. and the dr. tripled her other one! They were going to give her 3 weeks to improve before they tried shocking her heart if she didn't come out of AF. She has a pacemaker too.
Some of the assisted living places are extremely nice, but they can be extremely expensive too. The one where mysister's dear friend who just passed away lived had a $400,000. plus entry fee, plus was over $5,000.00 a month for her husband who'd had a stroke and requires full care and for herself. She had been independent until she developed cancer and became extremely ill. She was a retired attorney. All the best places even for long term full care have waiting lists here. There are about 8 communities like that within 3-5 miles from my house.
I hope all works out well for your MIL and the family.
Dad was really embarrassed when he had a woman come to the house to bathe him in the shower. I had gotten him a shower seat previously to help out. He finally got over his shyness somewhat. After a time, you just have to. He's had so many people help him to the toilet and to shower at the various places he's been since late Oct. '06 that he's about like a woman who's pregnant -- by the end of the 9 months, the gyno exams are no big deal anymore. LOL!
Hope your kitty is OK. One of Mom's had to go this AM too. Wonder if there could be an abscess in there? House cats live much longer than outdoor kitties. The longest I've had one is 6 weeks shy of 19 years. Two of ours were 16 in April, and we don't know how old their mother is. I think she was young when she had them, so she could still be 16 too. Riley is 2 already. Hard to believe it was that long ago Tim found her while on a bike ride.
Mom is doing better, so she shouldn't need the shock treatment. Maybe they just talked about putting her on Coumadin, because she isn't having blood drawn periodically. She did have biopsies on both eyelids a couple of days ago. One place she'd had a basal cell carcinoma many years ago and there's a small lump again, which is scaring her. The other eyelid was a total surprise. Sure hope there's not bad reports from them.
Dad is on so many medicines. Mom keeps a typed schedule and makes copies to take to the ER and various hospitals he's been in. She's outstanding at keeping all that stuff organized.
Elder care/Health care can definitely eat up savings in a short time. Even with medicare/medicaid it can be a real hardship. We're fortunate that Dad has been declared a 100% disabled vet, so the VA is now picking up a large portion of his bills.
