Karen,

So many of you here tell me often what a thoughtful and caring person I am but right now I'm envisioning you calling your Mom and telling her you have booked a get-away for just the two of you to spend some quality time together and make sure it's planned for the same weekend!

I think you should call your mom and tell her you're so sorry you can't be there for her party (surprise!), but that you'd love to get together with her in a couple of weeks and have the two of you do something special together.

It was incredibly rude and nervy of them to plan your mother's party without consulting you, even just asking if you'd like to participate, and then to let you know about it almost after the fact. Those people have some major issues and

I posted before I read your post, but we are definitely thinking along the same line. Reminds me of the story of the mother of the bride who got a beautiful dress and the new, much younger

First of all rude, nervy and just downright not nice not to have thought that maybe you would like to participate (even from a distance) plans for your mom's 80th and then to let you know at the last moment. Your siblings should be ashamed of themselves!

I'm sure this is an extremely difficult decision for you to have to make. You need to do what you feel is right for you to help celebrate your Mom's birthday. Maybe what the others have suggested that you spend some time with just you and your Mom would be a more appropriate way to help celebrate her 80th then go for it. I'm so sorry that what should be a happy occasion has turned into such a heart wrenching decision.

((((Hugs))))

Karen, I misunderstood that these were not your in-laws. Told you I am batty! Those are the people I feel have issues and are disgusting. LOL! I do think this was very rude and inconsiderate of your feelings, and even your mother's, if you wind up not being able to make it. Surely, she will want all her children there as long as she has to suffer through the surprise of the party.

Maybe a day trip closer to home for the 2 of you or you and DD would be more to her liking. Is she close to Philadelphia or Baltimore or somewhere like that? I'm not very familiar with what's near there. I've heard that Cape May, New Jersey, is a really neat Victorian style town. My sister and BIL took the ferry from MD and had a nice time there. Just a thought.
