How can I help my mother?

My mother is older and depressed. Dad is disabled and can't get out and Mom cares for him. She has really packed on the pounds in the last few months and we have talked to her about the fact her weight is going to cause her health problems if she is not careful. We got her one of those walking programs on TV and we're taking turns watching dad but when she does leave the house she heads straight to DQ. What else can we do to help her get back in shape?

Kay, it sure sounds like a hard situation for your mom.

I agree that your mom has to be ready and want to help herself. You can make it more pleasant and give her support, but ultimately she's the one who has to make the effort. Walking together would be a good way to burn calories and to have some additional quality time together. If she is stress eating, having more of your companionship and someone to talk to might help reduce that. Would she do Weight Watchers or something like that if a family member or friend did it with her?

Best of luck!

Thank you all. I don't live near my mother and neither do my sisters but we try to get in to her city at least once a week. We are trying to get her to go the YMCA and maybe make some friends. It is right by her house. Dad can stay by himself for about 2 hours so that helps.

How do you get started on weight watchers?

It's wonderful that you and your sisters are helping your mom. She's lucky to have your support.
