Hi my name is Jan, mother of five sons and age almost 47...I found this board because this year I've been going through some changes...Have found some clinical answers but wanted to hear from real women like myself...

Had no clue what was happening...I'm a pretty small person and always worked out and stayed in shape...I have put weight on this year for no apparent reason...I gained hips and back fat where there was none...My clothes don't fit any longer...I gave up drinking alcohol

Welcome, Jan! I think it's safe to say that we're all dealing in varying degrees with what you're going through and we have our wild and wacky hormones (or lack thereof) to thank for it. This is a great place to share ideas and support for dealing with it, as well as just about anything else that comes along. :-)

Now that's a good description not feeling like your in your own body!

Yup! I'm there, too. The fact is that as we age we need fewer calories. We also need to strength train and do additional cardio to help burn off those calories. If you've been doing the same workout for awhile, it's time to change it up because your body has become adjusted to the routine, and is no longer responding with fat or weight loss/maintenance.

To know for sure if what you're experiencing is hormonal, it's probably a good idea to check with a doctor. Some women that have symptoms like you describe discover that they have a thyroid problem. So, it's worth having a doc check it out.

I did a project and wrote a paper on peri-menopausal and menopausal weight gain. It's not inevitable, and it takes extra dilligence to combat....

Thanks for your input Judy,

As far as working out is concerned I try a variety of things. My favorite is Taebo and I do that about five days a week.

No kids here but weight has been a struggle for me all my life.

Sometime when I was 54 I started having periods more frequently and more heavily for a few of the days. For 2 years I had 13 or 14 a year instead of 12. Still, I was in no hurry to stop, because I didn't want to deal with hormone issues. Finally, at 57, I started missing a number of periods in a row, then surgery in Oct. of last year put me in menopause for sure.

I had noticed a lot more weight coming on around my middle. It seemed like suddenly, but was over a period of a couple of years. Now, I also battle really dry hair (except at the scalp) and really dry skin on my body. Also, gravity has had much more of an effect. Literally, a real drag!

Working out with weights is supposed to be the best way to up your metabolism, so maybe you could work more of that into your routine.
