What gym bag? ;-)

I head to the basement with a water bottle and grab a towel out of the pile of clean old towels that DH saves when they're no longer presentable.

Since I just finished re-packing it for tomorrow...

one set of workout clothes
socks and sneakers
sandals - for pilates and centergy
small towel for sweat
large towel for showers, should the mood strike
minimal toiletries, should I shower
plain white industrial strength bra and old-lady grannie knickers
pony-tail holder or two
hair brush
water bottle
gloves for rowing

Yoga mat rests on top of it

Yeah - it is a pretty good size bag.

One thing I keep in my bag that I would recommend to everyone is an ID bracelet. I walked outside for years until it dawned on me that all I had with me were my housekeys, and that if I was ever hit by a car or had an attack or whatever, there was no way for anyone to identify me. The bracelet is just a little velcro band I saw advertised in a magazine, with an etched metal tag that shows important info like name, phone numbers, insurance policy number, and health issues (e.g., mine has a code that means I'm an organ donor). I feel safer knowing I have the bracelet, and I even wear it when I'm on the treadmill at the gym. You never know when you're going to fall off and bump your head! ;)
