I'd like to get your opinions on working out at home vs. the gym.

It sounds like you're already concerned about making it to the gym only 2 times per week and working out at home is a better option for you.

Let me throw another option at you.

Do any of you belong to a gym? Do you like it and would you advise someone to join one?

A few years back, I belonged to a small "budget gym" that basically had cardio and weight machines, and that's it. And that's all I wanted -- treadmills and access to a few other machines. It was about $25/month and I went several times a week.

When I moved to another town, I joined the YMCA (even though it was a much higher $50/month) because it was only three blocks from my new home. I figured I'd use it even more because of its proximity, but the truth is, except during the coldest months of winter, I hardly ever go. Their exercise room is always jammed, the class schedule rarely varies, and I am paying for a lot of things I know I'll never use (e.g., gym, pool, child care). I'm a creature of habit, and in the end, pretty much all I want is still treadmills and a few other machines.

We are planning to move again this fall, so I'll be dropping the Y membership. If I could find a gym for $25/month or thereabouts, then I'd get another membership. If not, then I might consider just buying a treadmill (assuming both that I have enough space in my new home and that I want to lay out the cash for a nice machine -- two very big assumptions). If I can't find an appropriate membership or afford a treadmill, then darn it all, I'll just walk outside, which is what I enjoy doing whenever the weather is decent, anyway.

Guess that's all just a long way of saying that your choice to join the Y will depend on whether you think you'll *really* use it when push comes to shove. :)
