My DD was home a lot on the weekends. Somehow throughout 4 years of college she managed to work her schedule into having either Friday or Mondays off. She wasn't home as much her Freshman year since her then BF was down the street at Cooper Union. She was in NYC but her dorms found her in various locations including Brooklyn and downtown NYC which is in the business center. Nothing much to do there and you'd have to take the subway elsewhere in the city to get where you were going. After her first year the enthusiasm for city life grew thin-riding the subways wondering how many hands had touched the poles, being squashed in during rush hour and I guess the worst was riding the subway with the passenger beside her flossing their teeth and she had broken up with the BF. Not that there wasn't a lot to do in NYC but the whole scene wasn't for her. It just seems like they need to find their spot and whether campus life has things to offer that they can enjoy.
My other DD was a commuter student. The school actually didn't have dorms at that time but she wanted to live at home and go to school. In spite of living at home she still found plenty of ways to get herself into trouble. She was always a quiet kid and something happened that first year of college. She has constantly going to Brooklyn where all the kids she met lived and apparently there was no such thing as them coming to Long Island. She was coming in at all hours, and after her first half semester grades her grade point average was so low that we thought she would lose her grant money and we had to threaten to pull anymore loans for her continuing at the school and put an 11PM curfew on her. Fortunately she pulled her act together second semester and grades continued to rise after that. She ended up her last semester with a 4.0 although she missed graduating with honor because of her party hearty spirit that first semester (she doesn't like to be reminded of that) and she did continue on in grad school and graduated with a 4.0. So they definitely don't have to be on campus to get themselves into trouble!
It's tough not to worry because your name like mine is MOM and the middle name is always WORRY like mine but I'm sure he'll be fine!
