Your workout audio: Podcast or music?

I'm all about the podcast, personally--music doesn't distract me enough--but my sister has always listened to music while running (and books while walking). But yesterday she emailed me that she tried listening to a podcast (DAvid Sedaris on "This American Life") on her run and found it really mentally distracting (in a good way). So I'm bringing people over to the podcast/run movement one by one!

Seriously, though, I'm curious what other people listen to, while running or otherwise exercising. And, if you podcast, I'm always looking for recommendations!

I usually listen to music because I teach or participate in group fitness classes. I not only need music, I need people around me too. If I walk on the treadmill...the TV is on. Sometimes when I walk outside, I might listen to the mp3player or discman. I know...dating myself. Most times I just listen to my thoughts on my walks.

No worries--we're all dating ourselves here, just by virtue of being in this forum, right?

Podcasts are basically just MP3s of radio or TV programs. You can get a lot of them from iTunes for free. And there's a huge variety--news, politics and current events but also comedy and general entertainment.

On the treadmill or doing weights - the TV is on with the sound low.

It depends what type of fitness activity I'm doing as to what I listen to.

That's interesting that you need people around--I've never heard that before. I tend to prefer solitary exercise. Maybe it's a self-consciousness thing.
