Girls,

I need help. Have not bene here in a while but figured you guys could help. I am unable to lose weight due to a constant constipation problem. It has been an ongoingg problem for the last year. I have gone to see several doctors and am told that nothing is wrong and taht I should not compare my self to other people. Thats in response to my complaint of only going every 5 days. Finally got a docotr in mexico to give medicine that seemeed to help for a few weeks and then my body got used to it. I have tried metamucil, fiber foods, water everything and nothing helps. I'm only eating 1100-1300 calories a day and exercising 3 times a week treadmill for 45 mintues. and when the medicine is working, I lose 2 pounds a week, when it stops like now nothing lost not even an ounce. I'm getting really tired of this and any suggesstions would help. This si the same plan that i sed 5 years ago to lose 50 pounds but I did not have this problem. Please help

Hey, sounds like you have irritable bowel syndrome with constipation. There's a new mediaction out for it. (I guess people with IBS usually have diarrhea as opposed to constipation). This new med is for ones with constipation. It's called Zelnorm. You might want to reasearch it and see if that might be what you need.

Best of luck to you with that. I don't have it but constipation alone can be uncomfortable!! Let us know what you think??

Do you have boughts between diareah and constipation or just constipation? Have they run tests on you...checked to see if you have IBS etc? My friend has IBS with mainly constipation and bloating and they put her on zelnorm but it didn't help much then they put her on prozac and now she doesn't have much problems. I'd go see a gastroentologist. If you are only going to the bathroom once a week that is a problem. 1100 calories is low, increase your fat intake and some protein and you should poop freely. Remember you have to eat an amount of fat to keep things...moving along!

Thanks to both of you. Miranda I am at 173 started at 184 and goal weight is 150 i'm 5'5. I have tried the fruit way with no results. I have also gone to 3 different doctors who all treated me condescing. You know " this lady is looking for an easy way to lose weigth" That type of crap. I have given up they can not diagnose me as anything specifically wrong. Pam I don't know if I have irritable bowel syndrome sometimes I think I do but then I don't get why the doctors ignore me and my symptoms.

Thanks for all your info I do appreciate it.

Rainey- Miranda and Pam have given you some great words of wisdom there, and I don't have much more to offer I'm afraid. I think looking closely at your diet (has your doctor done that with you?) is a great way to see where your cals are coming from, and if there is anything you can do to help alter them in another direction (ie. more fruit, etc...)

Not sure what to say, but know that you're okay, to a point. I have poop about every 2-3 days. I'm told to up my fiber also. I think the norm amount is like 25g a day. Anyhow. Even when I was taking pills, I still went that often, only the stool was softer, so they told me I was fine. lol. Although, I don't have a weight loss problem connected to being constipated. When I was younger, I went once every 5 days or so. My old co-worker does that too. They told her she was fine, and to go when she has to, and not try to "hold it in" or anything like that.

I know I don't have IBS, and I don't have any of the symptoms, except I don't go "regularly" like "normal" ppl. To me, I am regular. lol. I go once every other day. I'm just not regular like the norm. twice a day. at the same times. Granted, if I

my pet!

I appreciate your info. I know that you can use the exlax and stuff to lose weight and I will not go that route. I know that it would be easy to lose weigth that way. I tell the doctors about my problem but I tell them that i am not losing for a quick fix or an easy way. I just want to be regular so it does not hinder my efforts. Last week I was regular and I lost sensibly my two pounds. Calorie wise is anywhere from 1100-1400 so I think thats the right amount.

Hey, Rainey...

Also, have you ever been checked for a condition called Polycystic Ovarian syndrome? (PCOS for short). I have that. And no matter what I did, I couldn't lose any weight. That's how I got diagnosed. My whole family went on a diet with me. We all followed it to a tee. They did it just to be supportive. My dad lost 25lbs. Mom lost 18. Ex-hub lost 21lbs.. and me?? I lost FOUR!!! Yep,.. 4 little pounds. And when I say I followed it to a T.. to the letter. And nothing. PCOS is a hormonal imbalance starting with your insulin. You insulin is resistant to the sugar in your blood. Your pancreas thinks you aren't putting out enough so it puts out more and more and more... and that throws all you other hormones outta whack. And that's what prevents weight loss and a whole lot of other symptoms. I didn't have constipation, but if I remember correctly, that's one of the few I didn't have. Anyway, give it a whirl.. Some of the other symptoms are: weight gain, unable to lose weight no matter what, acne, shakes when you eat sugar, terrible water retension (could attribute to the massive weight gain in days.. I HATED that...).. look it up. The list goes on and on.. and I diagnosed myself from reading a magazine article (and the diet that didn't work). Took it into my dr and said "I think I have this..." took a year and a half and a couple of specialists. Sure enough, getting to the right person (an Endocrinologist) I am MUCH better now. At this point, I have lost 40 lbs and kept that off for 2 years (I take glucophage to keep my hormones in check) and I've since lost another 7 or so recently (Hence the summer challenge we are all doing here :-) ). Anyway, some food for thought. I would be curious as to if you have any other symptoms when you read up on them. And again, good luck. You must feel miserable...

Keep us "posted" if you get anything figured out.

I would recommend what is called Sorbitol. It is a natural diuretic you can find at your local pharmacy without a prescription. My dd's PED. recommended it to her at the age of 1 or 2 but we didn't start using it till age 4 (first time parental fear). She had severe constipation probs until about age 6 so I can understand your pain : (

Sorbitol WILL work, if it doesn't then you really need to seek out a better doc. to look into things further for you. My dd took it for 2 years and it never stopped working for her.

Sorbitol is for anyone any age, it just happened to be my dd that had the problem and her PED only recommended it because it is natural and not harmful to children.

Good luck,

Sometimes we get out of sink with our bodies. If I don't get up early enough to take my time and read the paper and drink my cup of java it will throw my whole system off!! I don't know if that makes any sense but that is my 2cents worth. LOL

I hope you find an answer to this problem. It is a tough one.
