Here's something to keep in mind when you're tempted to have a "treat" that's not on your plan—estimate how much activity it will take to work off the indulgence! To figure it out, remember that a one-mile walk burns approximately 100 calories.

With that in mind, check out these examples:

Food
Calories
Miles of Walking

Cheeseburger
359
3.5

French fries, large
578
5.7

Soda pop, 16 ounces
201
2

Potato chips, 8-ounce bag
1217
12

Ice cream (vanilla), 2 scoops
290
2.9

Cheesecake, 1 piece
257
2.5

Chocolate bar, 1.5 ounces
223
2.2

Beer, 12-ounce can
117
1

As you can see, the old adage of "a moment on the lips, forever on the hips" rings true! While no food is "off-limits" on the plan, remember that it is a whole lot easier to eat calories than it is to burn them. So choose wisely—and plan to add a few extra miles of walking to your workout when you splurge!

Wow, that is a good reminder. My DH really believes that calorie reduction is the only way to lose weight. He stopped eating salads for lunch every day (now that he is home for the Summer.) Instead, he eats something else that is healthy, but higher in calories than salad and guess what? He gained 6 lbs. in 1.5 months just b/c of that! Nothing else he is eating/drinking has changed. Do you think this would work in reverse...if I ate salads every lunch would I LOSE 6 lbs.? LOL!

You know it probably would work in reverse Sylvia! I've often thought like that-- if I could just be that disciplined, or at least happy enough to have the same thing over and over! (I like and enjoy variety too much though!)

Is you dh enjoying his summer vaca? He must have gotten his holidays earlier than me, I've only been off for 4 weeks, but it seems like much longer. I don't go back until August 23rd...children on the 30th. How about your ds, will he be going back to Montessori in the fall?

Maybe our next challenge should be a salad one, lol!

i must be a freak :)

oh, what was it my dad used to say? oh yes! "it doesn't take much to please that girl". and he was right.

my favorite drink is water, or homebrewed raspberry iced tea.

and my dinner every night is a big salad with either a 6 oz baked chicken breast or 2 veggie burger patties. i'll find something i like to eat that's really good for me and just keep eating it till the end of time. as long as it tastes good and i know it's healthy, i'm happy.

LOL...the Salad Challenge! DH goes back a little earlier than you, so he probably did finish a little sooner. Summer is always great for both of us. Since he is around, I don't have to do as much around the house! DS will be going back to his Montessori school...it was really a great school for him last year. The only problem is that it went for-profit, which I'm not really crazy about. However, the teacher he will have again is really terrific, so I am going to keep him there as long as she is his teacher and then probably start looking at some other schools. How do you feel about the for-profit issue? Do you think that makes a difference?

Our school in non-profit...and to be quite honest I don't know enough to comment on either or.

Do you know why they changed over? Is the school having financial problems? Try to get involved with the PTA at the school and see what's going on....
