sugar blues - eliminating it from diet

Hi, I am 33 and am in my normal range for weight/height. However, I am flabby and tired and eat disgusting food. I have done weight watchers successfully and am a lifetime member. Since I had my baby 10 months ago I have been 8 pounds over my goal weight and can't seem to stick to my diet.

I have read a lot about the dangers of sugar and how addicting it can be. While I don't think that any diet that eliminates a food is good, I think eliminating sugar may be a smart move - I can drop the weight AND improve my mood AND sugar is not really a food, right?

I am have the Sugar Blues book and also the Suzanne Somers book.

I am looking for feedback from anyone about elminating sugar from my diet - how to do it and, if it is truly possible and what results people have had.

Thanks in advance!!

Hi & Welcome!

From reading the responses here I see the ladies have given you some great words of advice and comments about *sugar*. I don't really have a sweet tooth, however every now and then I get a craving.

Thanks everyone, for your encouragement! I tried to start this weekend with my no sugar rule. I made a salad for lunch and for dinner I made shrimp sauteed with tomoatoes and spinach and garlic over whole wheat pasta. Today I have a great plan for eating and last night I made a crock pot of ratatoulle for the week - emergency meals and lunches when I am in a hurry. I think my battle is going to be in (1) planning what I put in my mouth and (2) researching what I put in my mouth. In truth, I don't know anything about shrimp and tomotoes. I know they are not 'processed' but I don't know if they are necessarily good for me. I may be inadvertently messing up.

I do have one question maybe you can help me with. What is the connection between white flour and white sugar. I have heard that they are lumped together as the 'enemy' but I am not sure why. I checked lots of whole wheat breads, but they all contain sugar so I didn't buy them. Are pasta and bread really out, or can I buy something that truly contains no sugar? I think eliminating bread, pasta and bagels will be my undoing!!

Thanks!~

I don't know enough about a sugar-less diet to answer that one, but you may want to try health food stores, or organic stores that carry specialized products.

Since like Miranda I can't really answer this question....you could go over to the Healthy Eating Expert board (http://messageboards.ivillage.com/iv-fbask) and ask them. If you do, let us know what they say - please ;-)

Just a thought here...but wouldn't completely eliminating sugar from a diet be impossible.

Hi Steffy,

You are right and I wasn't very clear ... I am eliminating refined sugars. I do still eat fruit and wouldn't consider giving it up. I think it is dangerous to eliminate a food group entirely but white sugar is not a food group - it's poison. After 36 hours, I have somewhat of a better idea of what was happening to my body. It is almost as though I have been 'high' my whole life and just continually searched for that next jolt - even when I didn't think I was looking. refined sugars are in SO MANY foods that you would never consider to be sweets. The average american eats 150pounds of sugar / year (according to my reading, but I can't quote a direct source)

These last two days i have been a little dizzy and tired when I have my sugar urges but I know they will go away. Also, I have been eating like a queen! I haven't been hungry at all.

Overall, I am so glad I am making this effort!

Thanks, again, for your post.
