New Here and need help!

Hi, I'm Evy (35) and new Mom to a 7 month old baby. I'd like to loose at least 20 lbs. but first let me tell you a bit about myself and my situation. I had never had a weight problem, in fact while in college I was doing everything I could to GAIN weight. I've always been thin and petite, I'm only 5'1". I had the body of a little boy. But no matter what I did I couldn't get to 100 lbs. My friends hated me because I could eat as much as I wanted of whatever I wanted and not gain a pound.

Now fast forward 10+ years later, when I hit my 30’s the weight started creeping up, I had a 9-5 office job and my metabolism slowed down. I didn’t gain too much excess weight with my son, the average 20-25 lbs. But now have NO time to exercise or think about what I'm eating! I wake up around 6:30am drive my son to daycare (my Mom’s house an hour away!) go to work, get home around 5:30-6pm, make dinner, clean up, give baby a bath, bottle and get him to sleep around 8:30pm. I’m exhausted by then and usually end up going to bed with him because he still wakes up in the middle of the night for a feeding and stays up for over an hour! I am very unhappy with the way I look, my big clothes size 10 are now tight on me but I refuse to go up another size. I haven't gotten on a scale recently but I'd say I'm about 130lb. I am exhausted and since I never had to watch what I eat I have terrible eating habits and NO self control whatsoever! I stopped nursing a month ago, and I didn’t want to diet while breastfeeding. But now I have no excuse except finding time and the energy to do it! Any advice for a tired new Mom with no self-control?

Well, I think the first thing to getting your metabolism up, is start drinking water, just always carry a 12oz or 16oz bottle around with you, that way when your thirsty, you have water there, and fill it up right after you finish it, that way you don't wait until you're thirsty again, and end up with a soda or coffee

It also sounds like you probably don't have a lot of time to eat, when you should, so maybe several small meals throughout the day would be a good choice, you can just pack a bag in the morning, with 3-5 small meals, like a piece of fruit, a sandwich, some reduced fat crackers, yogurt, or even some chips or candy, now and then, just in small amounts, things you can snack on every couple of hours, plus eating frequently helps your metabolism

For exercise, trying just doing 5min at a time, take a walk on your on your lunch break (and if you have carriable foods , then you can walk and eat at the same time) or while your cooking dinner, pick up some weights and do a few reps, bicep curls are pretty easy, and you can still watch food/baby while doing them

And of course, join the Back to School challenge, and post your results everyday, that way you get a daily recap, and it can be surprising how good or bad you've done for the day

Also, record everything you eat or drink and all your exercise, and if you record it right after you do it, it's easier

Welcome Evy! I think we all understand your predicament- we just had an interesting thread of posts about *time management*.... http://messageboards.ivillage.com/n/mb/message.asp?webtag=iv-fbfitthirty&msg=8276.1&ctx=0

I would totally agree with someones earlier post of increasing your water intake- it's amazing the difference it makes. (I should really take some heed of my own advice here, lol!) If squeezing in exercise to your day is too much at the moment, then I would suggest working on your *diet* and as was suggested journalling it. That helps a great deal too. Making small changes helps in the l-o-n-g run.

One of our favorite motto's here is .... baby steps! Good luck, and looking forward to seeing you 'round the board ~IslandGirl

Thanks for the warm welcome a great advice:

So, I need to drink more water; Take walks at lunch time; and eat small frequent meals. I think I can do that. I might even squeeze a walk on the treadmill after baby goes to bed. I just need to get motivated and I think this helps!

Thanks and I'll be checking in-
