I just found iVillage and have found so many interesting things here. I have alwasy had an interest in sports, but have developed a great deal of interest in fitness and nutrition over the last two or three years. I don't know if it has to do with the fact that I have just left my 20s or our family history of high blood preasure and heart disease. But I really do enjoy my work out time.

I am finishing my 3rd year of training in Hap Ki Do. Is anyone else in this 30s group involved in the martial arts?

Welcome to THE board, and to iVillage Lorie!

You will find lots of support, advice and friendship here, and great infomation and tips all around the village. I think you'll be so happy you found us!

Could you post a little more info for us on Hap Ki Do? I've never heard of it- though I'm not a martial arts person I still have interest in learning about it.

Looking forward to posting with you ~IslandGirl

Happy Halloween!

Hi Steffy

Which martial art do you participate in? Hap Ki Do is one of the Korean martial arts, our school also teaches Tae Kwon Do to both kids and adults, although it is often compared to Aikido which is Japanese. We do a bit of weapons study as well. I would expect that most sword work involved in any martial art would come from Japan and the Samurai, don't you think?

I's a red belt. I need a set of stripes and the final stripe before I test for black belt. I would say I am about a year away. I'm sure it will be worth the effort. Good luck with your progress toward yours.

I look forward to getting to know you guys.

Hi Islandgirl,

We practice a modern form of Hap Ki Do at North American Tae Kwon Do and Hap Ki Do Academy in Michigan. It is Korean. It is often compared to Aikido which is associated iwth Japan. In addition to respect, humility and confidence commonly taught in martial arts, in this form we are taught to:to avoid meeting force with force, use an attacker's energy against him/her and to use our ki (our center, core strength) instead of force to control a situation. We learn some common kicks and punches from Tae Kwon Do, to the extent that we spar with the Tae Kwon Do class. But we also learn the wrist locks, take downs and escape moves through which we can accomplish the goals already mentioned. As far as the history, I need to do some research as to how the form developed and how it came to American. I will need to do a paper when I test for black belt. I will pass that along someday.

Thanks for sharing the info with us! Sounds pretty cool actually- and by the sounds of things you're pretty involved. I'm sure you'll be heading towards that black belt in no time!
Happy Halloween!

Hi Lori,

Welcome to the gang. I love watching the martial arts. I want to join a Krav Mag class as soon as I get my weight under control. I figure if I try anthing now in the shape I am in I am going to hurt myself. Good luck with the work to the black belt.
