So far off season is going just the way I planned, except for the swimming. I haven't been able to get to the pool much over the last month mostly due to "volunteer commitments". However, I'm very happy with where I am over all.
Today I did a 16 mile bike then 50 mins raking leaves. (I was going to do a brick but the leaves were almost knee deep so I thought I'd better fix my priorities.)
O and I may have found a training partner who is just getting back into Tri's after having kids and doesn't mind at all that I'm slow. It will make things so much easier to have someone to be accountable to for swims or runs.
So this week's agenda is (in min)
Monday= Run 40
Tues= *Bike 30 Run 30 (*Bike is Optional)
Wed= Swim 20
Thurs=Bike 30 Run 30
Fri= Swim 20
goal distances= atleast 30 miles biking, 10 miles running, and 1.5 miles swimming
Also I'll have atleast an hour of belly/butt work this week to keep up with the challenge.
So ladies what are you doing this week?
Heather there is a good book out there written by the Danskin Pro, I'll look up the title this week for you.

Still tri-ing (I'm so punny lol) to figure out the logistics of training and exactly what I should be doing this off season-especially since its my first one and soon it will be the big ramp up to my first tri!
I think I can help so I'm going to take your questions/concerns and try and work through them.
Still tri-ing (I'm so punny lol) to figure out the logistics of training and exactly what 1.) I'm waiting for Danskin to release the official 2005 dates still. It also dosen't help that the Avon 3 day B/C walk is the same weekend potentially, now I have to choose. Although I feel like if I choose the walk it will be a sort of cop-out on my part but its a good back up anyway. The Trinewbies site says you should choose a tri in your area, I wonder if that's totally necessary (especially since a destination tri would be further motivational not to mention that its very hilly here)?
Ok, first off, I disagree with the local race if you are able and eager to fit in a trip. Doing a tri is all about motivation and if it would motivate you and make your family happier to do one out of town. Then go for it. It is recommended to do a sprint first but in my case, the race that fit my time frame and motivated me was an oly about an hour and a half away. So GO FOR IT!!! Who knows you may only do one, not likely but possible pick the one you are most drawn to.
2.) Also thier begginer tri training programs seem really basic. I know that tris are all about ballencing the 3 sports but I'm a strong swimmer and fairly strong runner, the bike deal is where I stink (ok I'll admit it I'm afraid to bike on the acutal *road*, besides did I mention its hilly here LOL) and I only own a MB that hasen't been used (consistantly anyway) in a LOOOONG time. I doubt that the bike will make it out of the basement anytime soon anyhow, its getting really cold here now. I don't want to go overboard too soon but if I want to be better in each (get better times, run faster, swim faster bike faster and increase my stamina)
As for training programs, they are guides. It isn't that hard to tailor one to your needs and I'll address this one more in #3. Biking, although intimidating can be very doable. Don't be afraid to start off by solely trianing on the upright exercise bike, If you wish invest in a bike trainer (~$100.) that will allow you to use your mountain bike inside, (my first race was on a mountain bike as will be most peoples in the Danskin) infront of the TV or wherever is convenient. Miles on the Trainer/exercise bike are translatable. Then when it gets closer to your race and you have some real training under your belt you can use that last 12-9 weeks to get used to biking out doors. You don't even have to do long rides outside if you are in a busy city or unsafe area. Just bike where you are comfortable to get the feel of biking and manuvering on the road. A Lot of Triathletes actually train this way and I've talked to some high placing age groupers who do 75% of their bike training indoors. The more time you are actually training the better your times will be and since this is your first you can only go up from here .
3.) My gym membership gets renewed at the end of the month, and included in that memebership is like 4 personal training sessions, I also have this fear that my trainer (who does tris too btw) will fall down in chuckles when I tell him that that's what I want to do. Anyway this is what I have planned this week...
I can promise you he won't fall over laughing. Triathletes by far are the friendliest craziest people you will ever meet. When you renew, tell him what you are doing and ask him about the type of equipment he would recommend. Strength training improves speed and power in racing. Also, take an idea of a "training schedule" with you and ask for his imput. Remember he isn't a coach but he should be able to offer a pointer or two.
Your week looks great. Check in often and we'll keep each other on track.
