I'm sure you all have discussed such things before and hope I'm not bringing up a topic your sick to death of.

Anyway, have any of you found a system that works for you in regards to treats and those things we really shouldn't have but can't imagine going without.

Moderation is key I know.

However, is it good to have a few bites of ice cream

Gretchen, I'm horrible at developing a good system, but I'm sure that we had a post a while back that had some great info, so let me just take a look here . . .

Miranda has beat me to it! She found you some great 'old' posts for you to look at and get some ideas! I think if you can be strict enough with yourself to just have some of the ice cream at night, then that would be fine, especially if you think you might overdo it if you don't have any at all!!

I like the idea of consequences ;-)
You'd have to be a real stickler to have and go through with them though!

I don't like the idea for consequenses at all...its a big turnoff for me and would make me not want to do anything at all.

If it is ice cream that you crave, try light frozen cool whip. I read on another site that the creamy texture (and I personally LOVE cool whip) helps you feel satisfied, but it is really lower in calories than ice cream.

Thanks for the links Miranda!

First off I am not getting a tatoo. I appreciate others tatoos but I just know I'd pick something I'd be sick of in a month.

I realized that a reward doesn't have to be food. Go figure.

When I lost weight with my 1st two kids, I would eat really well during the week and let myself have my favorite treats on the weekends, but only a serving size and no more. I cook most nights of the week, so on the weekend, when we eat out, I get whatever I want , but only eat half of my meal which is really a whole normal meal.

I'm good during the week because I know that if I am, I'll enjoy my weekends so much more since I won't have any guilt and I know I've earned my right to eat treats.

If I eat more than I should during the week for any reason, I make sure to exercise that day or to eat a light dinner with extra veggies.

I think you and Heather are right. A consequence would make exercise seem like a punishment. My original thinking was I'd be less likely to pick up the soda if I was going to have to do more crunches or something. However, I could just be developing another bad habit.

I guess I was thinking of consequences like-- well if I didn't do my workout I didn't deserve that one diet coke in the evening. Maybe it's just me, but I think it might work....not as a punishment per se, more of a natural consequence (an infamous Montessori saying, lol)....

That is a great way to manage things. Weekends are the hardest for me because the kids and my DH are around and it's a little harder to control what is available to eat. So that makes since to look at it as a treat while still trying to control portions.
