I am trying to compile a list of food/drinks that are healthy alternatives to my usual junk. I want to use this list when I go shopping and for those times I stop at mini mart or run into the store because I didn't have time for breakfast or whatever. This way I'll have choices that are smart rather than being in a rush and grabbing a soda and a bag of chips.
What I have so far. Not much. lol
Trail Mix, wheat crackers, V8splash (diet), water, carrots (veggies), pistachios, apples, grapes, bananas, cheese, meal replacement drinks, yogurt.
Have any of you tried the Snapple meal replacements? I love these but they are very hard to find around here. I liked them because they were more juice like and not thick like some of those yogurt smoothie things.
If anyone has any suggestions please post them. I'm trying to have a no excuse plan.

Hi Gretchen,
Great List! If you're looking for a new meal-replacement shake, I'd like to recommend Shapeworks by Herbalife. This wasn't meant to be an advertisement, but they do have many more products which not only fill you up when you have that urge to snack (as I do everyday around 2-3pm), but also fill in that middle-of-the-day dose of energy sap :)

I often drink a Slim Fast in the morning because I have regressed from being one who is up and ready on time to running out the door, barley together in the morning. I can just throw a can in my back pack.
When I get tired of that, I usually eat a Luna Bar for breakfast. I order them by the case of 15. Our local food co-op sells them too. They're made in about 15 flavors, from Key Lime to Nutz Over Chocolate (my fav) to Chai Tea, and are a nutrition bar for women, soy protien thing. They make a good mid-afternoon snack too. They are becoming available at more of the major grocery stores now.

Gretchen, looks like you have a pretty good list so far.
There are many books out there that have lists already made. Fat Flush, Jorge Cruise and Adkins are a few. I found a product that I like real well for a snack or meal replacement. It's by Immune-Tree called Slim Factors Accelerator. I bought the Chocolate flavored can at the health food store for about $32.00. I like the scoop-my-own method but they do sell the individual plastic bottles with the powder in it so you can add your water or milk for about $2.99 each.I really like the flavor and I haven't had any bad reactions to it (which is common for me). I've tried others that have made me sick or have dehydrated me. Hope this helps!

Hey Gretchen, your list so far is:
And I would add:
The other suggestions I'd have is to make up salads in little containers (fruit salads, green salads, greek salads) so that they're always ready to go.
i usually eat a luna bar for a quick breakfast too. i also buy them by the case, it's a bit cheaper.
i think throwing some nonperishable snacks in your purse or backpack is better than relying on a convenience store. honestly, there is nothing in a convenience store that i will eat other than fruit and dry roasted nuts. be aware that trail mix at the convenience store might have added oils or chocolate. if you can find "dry roasted" nuts of any sort, that would be a lot healthier.
Thanks everyone for all the suggestions. Copied everything into by journal that I carry in my purse. I'm anxious to check out some of these different bars.
If you think of anything else let me know.
This should really help eliminate some of those excuses I use for making bad choices.
Next is coming up with a plan for my evening time.
Miranda, thanks for making the list helped to get it copied.
You're so right about those crackers. I actually read that people shouldn't eat crackers at all. I don't quite buy that, but some are too high in sodium and fat and stuff.
Miranda had a good idea with the soy nuts too.
I like having a food co-op close to my apartment. Although not everything organic or otherwise at the co-op is healthy because it's there, but they do offer a lot of natural options for snacks and meals.
Fresh fruits and veggies are always a good bet, but it's harder in the winter to get good stuff and at a reasonable price.
This is a good thread; lots of good advice.
i'm lucky to have a co-op right near my house too. it makes it so much easier to find healthy snacks. i just found a new snack bar that i like, they are called bumble bars. the main ingredient seems to be sesame seeds! weird, but yummy.
but i sympathize with people who don't have health food stores nearby - it can be hard to find healthy snacks and quick meals. that's why i really racked my brain to think of things that people could buy at the regular grocery store. luckily, most grocery stores throughout the country are starting to carry more health food type products, like soy milk and soy nuts.
